Public Lecture “ASEAN Development at Fifty” by Michael Vatikiotis

25 July, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Former journalist and Southeast Asia expert Michael Vatikiotis of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue will give a public talk at SEA Junction reflecting on development in ASEAN as it celebrates its 50th Anniversary. Southeast Asia evokes narratives of rapid growth, as a thriving economic hub with an overall annual growth rate of more than 5%.  Yet, a closer look reveals that the benefits and costs of development are not shared equitably among the countries and peoples of the region. Intraregional and in-country gaps are widening often according to identity and socio-economic lines, with marginalised ethnic and migrant communities missing out on the emerging opportunities. Regional and state institutions are confronted with rapid and complex region’s dynamics resulting in a multitude of socio-cultural impacts requiring new societal systems and policy approaches. This evolving dynamism and its inherent tensions as well as possible development options are among the issues to be discussed by the speaker in what promises to be a fascinating and multi-layered portrait of Southeast Asia.

Michael Vatikiotis is a graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and gained his doctorate from the University of Oxford. He is a member of the Asia Society’s International Council and has a decade of experience working as a private diplomat for the Geneva-based Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. He is a former BBC journalist who has worked in Asia for over thirty years, living in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong. He now lives in Singapore and is the author of two previous books on Southeast Asia as well as two novels set in Indonesia.
