Embracing the presence and socio-cultural and economic contribution of migrants in the Greater Mekong Sub-region

Brief Description

On 8-16 October, the Mekong Migrant Network (MMN) in collaboration with SEA Junction held a photo exhibition entitled ‘Beyond “Tolerance”: Living Together with Migrants’. The exhibited photographs depicting the aspirations and struggles of migrants in destination and home countries were taken by documentary photographer John Hulme as part of MMN ongoing project to advocate for migrants’ integration supported by the Toyota Foundation.

The opening event took place on 8 October at 3pm at Room 501 (5th fl) of the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC) and consisted of a key note speech by former Senator and Mangsasay Awardee John Ungpakorn, the screening of a multi-media documentary on GMS migrants using photographs, a panel discussion with migrant representatives of the Workers’ Solidarity Association (WSA) and Brahm Press of MAP Foundation, a leading migrants’ rights NGO, and a migrants’ cultural performance by WSA. Selected photos were later exhibited at SEAJunction until 16 October. On 15 October a conversation was also held with John Hulme on his art and techniques as well as the reasons of his engagement.
