SUMMARY:2020 APSA Asia Workshop: Call For Leadership Proposals
DESCRIPTION:The American Political Science Association (APSA) is pleased to announce a call for proposals from political scientists interested in serving as co-leaders for the 2nd annual Asia Workshop. The one-week program will be held at a university or research institute in East Asia in the summer of 2020. For a full description of the program and application process\, see the project website: https://connect.apsanet.org/asia/. \nBackground \nFunded by Henry Luce Foundation\, the Asia Pacific Workshops are a multi-year effort to support political science research and networking among early-career scholars across the East and Southeast Asia. The workshops extend APSA’s engagement with the international political science community and strengthen efforts to support research networks linking U.S. scholars with colleagues in Asia. The inaugural workshop is being hosted by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang\, Malaysia from June 23-29\, 2019. \nWorkshops are hosted in cooperation with universities and research institutions in East and Southeast Asia. Each program is led by a team of two scholars based at universities in the Asia and two scholars based in the U.S. \nUp to twenty competitively-selected PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers from across the Asian region are selected to participate. Each program is dedicated to a substantive issue in political science\, with a unique schedule of lectures\, discussions\, topical presentations and debates\, guest speakers\, peer review sessions\, professional development seminars\, and local field trips. Throughout the program\, fellows receive critical feedback on their own research and work to refine their manuscripts for publication. The working language of the program is English. \nWorkshop co-leaders serve as academic directors of the program and are responsible for identifying universities or research institutes in the region to host the workshops\, preparing a unique syllabus with readings and discussion sessions\, and providing detailed feedback on participants’ research. Program administration and logistics will be led by APSA staff in conjunction with local host partners. An honorarium will be provided and related expenses (transportation and lodging) will be covered. \nApplication Instructions and Criteria \nWorkshop proposals should be submitted jointly by the four co-leaders (two based in the Asia and two based in the U.S.). Leadership teams may include a combination of junior (assistant professor) and senior scholars (associate or full professor); however\, must include at least two senior scholars with experience advising PhD candidates. Proposals should explain the scope of the professional ties between workshop co-leaders\, with preference given to individuals and teams demonstrating previous collaboration\, and to teams that represent diverse communities across East Asia\, Southeast Asia\, and the United States. \nWorkshop proposals should specify\, with justification\, where the workshop will take place and with which institution (since the 2019 workshop will take place in Southeast Asia\, proposals should indicate an institutional partner in East Asia to host the 2020 workshop). Strong preference will be given to proposals that include one of the Asian-based co-leaders’ institutions as host partner. Local partners must present a welcoming environment for social science research and have the institutional capacity to support a successful residential workshop\, including close linkages to local institutions of higher education and research communities. \nProposals should be written in three sections:\nI. Workshop Theme (2-3 pages)\nThe workshop theme proposal should provide a coherent intellectual foundation for the overall program. Prospective co-leaders should specify a thematic focus and outline relevant sub-themes from which they will build a reading list and set the schedule of events for both workshop weeks. Any research topic or substantive theme in political science is welcome. Proposals should address how the theme will incorporate theoretical and methodological training\, how it will incorporate new developments in the field and literature\, and how it will achieve the program goals of supporting regional networking and publication. \n\nLeaders and Partners (2-3 pages)\nIn this section\, co-leaders must provide detailed information on the following:\n– Identify the workshop co-leaders and describe the professional ties between them.\n– A specific division of labor among the workshop leaders. For example\, which workshop leaders are best suited to assume responsibility for particular sub-themes? Which workshop leaders can help identify local guest speakers for particular topics?\n– Proposed location and institutional partner\, including:\n– Specification and justification for workshop locations and host university/research institutes\n– Overview of recommended host institutions and relevant background\, including:\n– Description of institutional capacity to host a residential workshop for 25 participants\n– Explanation of existing ties to local research communities and universities\n– Description of past experience in hosting social science conferences or events\n– Several possible dates for the 7-day workshop. We prefer for the summer program to be held in June or July\, but alternative schedules may be considered. Final dates will be set in consultation with APSA staff\, co-leaders\, and host partners.\n– Commitment to the collective leadership of the workshop\, including devoting sufficient time to:\n– reviewing all participant applications\n– finalizing the workshop syllabus and schedule\n– preparing for and attending the workshop in residence\n– consulting regularly with APSA staff throughout the workshop program\n– communicating with fellows over the course of the workshop program as needed\n\nIII.
