SUMMARY:Colonial Experiences and Their Legacies in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:Registration: March 1\, 2019 \nThis multidisciplinary summer institute\, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities\, will offer four weeks of context-rich exploration of the multiple ways in which Southeast Asian societies responded to colonial presences and how the legacies of these experiences have shaped subsequent efforts to forge national identities\, envision independent political futures\, and imagine new relationships between the state and its citizens. Moving chronologically from the late-19th century to the post-independence period\, the institute program will engage key themes\, traditions\, practices and primary texts through country case studies\, providing participants with the resources needed to develop new curricular materials for courses in a wide range of humanities and social science disciplines. The program will be co-directed by Barbara Watson Andaya (University of Hawaii) and Peter D. Hershock (East-West Center). \nApplications will be welcomed from eligible fulltime and adjunct faculty\, as well as qualified graduate students\, at American colleges and universities. Applicants with less than 5 years in the profession will be given special consideration. Participants will receive a stipend of $3300 to defray costs for travel\, housing\, meals and incidentals.
