SUMMARY:Confronting Elusiveness: Demanding Accountability in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:n Southeast Asia many countries have experienced and continue to experience human rights violations. Yet\, with the possible exception of Cambodia\, the perpetrators have not been brought to justice and efforts to find out the truth and ascertain responsibilities have proven elusive. The journalists and human rights defenders\nho fight for accountability too often become victims themselves. At the same time\, all across the region there are movements challenging denial and impunity\, and employing various strategies to demand accountability. New generations are also emerging with a desire for knowing and reckoning with the past in order to shape a rights-based future for their country. \nWhile the contexts and abuses may differ\, there are common spaces and strategies to tap on. This panel will focus on efforts at accountability in the region and will consider some of the following questions. What strategies are being employed? What choices and compromises; if any\, are being made? What alliances are being formed? What is the synergy between efforts at the national\, regional and international levels? What are the hopes in the midst of obstacles to ensure justice? \nModerator: Rosalia Sciortino\, Founder and Executive Director SEA Junction \nSpeakers: \nGaluh Wandita\, Co-founder and Director at Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR)\nConfronting enduring impunity in Indonesia and Timor Leste \nAung Khaing Min\, Advocacy and Research Officer Burma Partnership\nReconciliation and Transitional Justice in Myanmar \nEdgardo Legaspi\, Executive Director\, Southeast Asian Press Alliance\nEnding the cycle of impunity for crimes against journalists in Southeast Asia \nThis event will also feature the presentation of the book “Enduring Impunity” a compilation of stories of women survivors in Indonesia\, Timor Leste and Myanmar. \nIn the afternoon at 5pm SEA-Junction\, will be launched at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center.
