SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Migration\, and Exploitation in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:The past ten years have been the warmest on record\, with Asia warming at nearly double the global average. Across Southeast Asia\, rising temperatures are causing droughts\, soil erosion\, and erratic rainfall patters\, as well as increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events\, such as typhoons. These conditions are exacerbating pre-existing socioeconomic vulnerabilities\, with the worst effects falling on rural communities and workers in already precarious and low-paid sectors\, such as agriculture\, construction\, or fishing. With homes and fields destroyed by a changing climate\, many people feel they have no choice but to migrate to bigger cities or other countries to earn a living to support themselves and their families. \nThis event will discuss some of the impacts of the climate crisis in Southeast Asia. Speakers will present new research on how climate and other ecological changes are affecting people’s lives and livelihoods in Thailand\, Cambodia\, and the Philippines\, as published in the new issue of the journal Anti-Trafficking Review (https://antitraffickingreview.org).   \nThe latest issue is now available online here: https://www.antitraffickingreview.org/index.php/atrjournal/issue/view/36 \nSpeakers: \nDavid Feingold\, Researcher and Director of Ophidian Research Institute and Ophidian Films Ltd \nSallie Yea\, Associate Professor of Human Geography\, Charles Sturt University\, Australia and co-guest editor of Anti-Trafficking Review \nRuta Nimkar\, Co-founder and Director of Meraki Labs \nModerator: Borislav Gerasimov\, Editor of Anti-Trafficking Review\, Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women \n  \n \nFor more information\, please email: info@seajunction.org or phone/wa: +66970024140 \nOrganizer \nThe Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW) is a network of non-governmental organisations from all regions of the world\, who share a deep concern for the women\, children and men whose human rights have been violated by the criminal practice of human trafficking.
