SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Migration\, and Exploitation in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:The past ten years have been the warmest on record\, with Asia warming at nearly double the global average. Across Southeast Asia\, rising temperatures are causing droughts\, soil erosion\, and erratic rainfall patters\, as well as increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events\, such as typhoons. These conditions are exacerbating pre-existing socioeconomic vulnerabilities\, with the worst effects falling on rural communities and workers in already precarious and low-paid sectors\, such as agriculture\, construction\, or fishing. With homes and fields destroyed by a changing climate\, many people feel they have no choice but to migrate to bigger cities or other countries to earn a living to support themselves and their families. \nThis event will discuss some of the impacts of the climate crisis in Southeast Asia.
