SUMMARY:GETSEA Mini Course: The Performing Arts in Southeast Asian History and Society
DESCRIPTION:The consortium for Graduate Education and Training in Southeast Asian Studies (GETSEA) is offering free and virtual mini-course this fall\, open to all graduate students studying Southeast Asia. \nThis course does not offer credit\, but students are encouraged to work with a faculty member at their own institution to count the course as an independent study credit. Priority will be given to M.A. and Ph.D. students from GETSEA member institutions\, however\, students from all institutions are welcome to apply. The course entails a workload of equivalent to roughly one credit. Only those committed to completing all aspects of course should apply. Applications are due September 20\, 2021. \nInstructors: \n\nSupeena Insee Adler\, Curator of World Musical Instrument Collection and Adjunct Assistant Professor\, UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology\nHelen Rees\, Professor and Director of World Music Center\, UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology\nMaureen Russell\, Archivist\, UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive\, and Adjunct Professor\, UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology\n\nCourse description \nSoutheast Asia is renowned for its rich performing arts traditions. Many\, such as Javanese and Balinese gamelan\, Cambodian classical dance\, and the numerous puppetry arts of the region\, are known worldwide. They are deeply embedded in local religious and social life\, have in some cases gained new economic functions via tourist performance\, and have long acted as bellwethers of historical and political change. This course encourages graduate students from all majors to integrate evidence from and experience of the performing arts into their own work. It provides rich primary source materials from the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive\, one of the largest ethnographic sound archives in North America\, for students to explore for their own research.
