SUMMARY:Introduction to Buddhist Arts in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:Southeast Asia has been strongly influenced by Buddhism since the 6th century AD. Both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism played important roles in the development of art in the region\, as can be seen in Buddha images\, stupas and pavilions. All across the countries of Southeast Asia that are predominantly Buddhist such as Cambodia\, Laos\, Myanmar and Thailand\, temples are beautified with various styles of stupas\, and also in the other countries in the region ancient stupas are admired for their beauty and their historical value. \nThe lecture of art historian Cheda Tigsanchai on 13 November at SEA Junction will introduce the art of Buddhism in Southeast Asia and discuss their styles\, their iconography as well as their social and cultural function. \nChedha Tingsanchali is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Archeology of Silpakorn University in Bangkok.
