SUMMARY:Mural Creation “Together We Build”
DESCRIPTION:Background \nChuu Wai\, one of the most prominent contemporary woman artists from Myanmar\, has returned to collaborated with SEA Junction once again. This time\, with a new mural art project. Together We Build is a public mural project in Bangkok that explores the deep interconnections between migration\, labor\, and the environment. Centered on the theme of migrant worker and their interconnection with their destination country\, this project is hosted in partnership with Ship to Shore Rights Southeast Asia and ILO\, funded by the European Union. The mural\, to be installed as part of the Bangkok vibrant cityscape around May 2026\, highlights the interconnectedness of migration and labour across borders\, amplify the essential contributions of workers across different\, vital sectors. These workers are integral to sustaining both local communities and regional economies\, yet their experiences often remain invisible. By placing these narratives in a public space\, the mural raises awareness of the challenges faced by migrant workers while affirming their resilience\, dignity\, and indispensable role in shaping societies. \nThe mural\, currently in progress at Thonglor House\, is open for public participation. We invite those in the areas and those who are interested to join us in creating this piece of public art which will be on display for the next two years. This piece of work is a result of preceding workshops that was hosted by SEA Junction\, translating the voices\, lived experiences and messages from the migrants who are a part of Thai society into the public art display. As one of the largest destination countries of migrant in the SEA region\, the Thai economy is deeply intertwined with migration\, yet the voices of those who has left their homelands in hope for works often go unheard. This mural hopes to highlight the interconnectedness of migration and labour across borders\, and to amplify the essential contributions of workers across different\, vital sectors. These workers are integral to sustaining both local communities and regional economies\, yet their experiences often remain invisible. By placing these narratives in a public space\, the mural raises awareness of the challenges faced by migrant workers while affirming their resilience\, dignity\, and indispensable role in shaping societies. \nPaint time each day is divided into 2 sessions (morning and late afternoon). She has been active since 2008 when she began studying at the National University of Art and Culture (Mandalay) and Technological University (Mandalay). She has had solo and group exhibitions both in Myanmar and internationally including in London\, Paris\, New York\, Berlin\, Luxembourg\, Hong Kong and Canberra and often also gives art talks. She is a founder of ‘Young Dream’ under the Jefferson Center (Mandalay) which is a group organizing workshops and exhibitions for young artists and in Myanmar she is considered a media figure and a young influencer artist. \nSince 2015\, Chuu has been working on paintings which reflect her interest in the female identity when her artistic impulse found a new outlet after the sexual harassment of a guy on the street. This experience made her focus on gender issues and the condition of women in Myanmar today.
