SUMMARY:Negotiating Bangkok Streets
DESCRIPTION:On 7 July SEA Junction launched a new series on street food and its many dimensions in Southeast Asia in collaboration with “Beyond Food” an initiative focusing on how street food is embedded in the functioning of cities and peri-urban areas. The series highlights the link of street food with other urban dimensions such as use and design of public spaces\, urban safety\, urban formal economy\, and right to the city among others. \nThe first event discussed the implication of an eventual disappearance of street food in Bangkok mainly from an economic perspective. On 6 September\, the second event will focus on how spatial arrangements (banning\, eviction\, zoning and such) by the municipal and national government interact with corporate interests and impact on the physical space of street vendors (not only food) and how vendors try to negotiate with the authorities for survival. Findings from research in Khaosan Road and in Siam Square will be presented and serve as a base for discussion.
