SUMMARY:One Myanmar: Documentary Screening\, Books Presentation and Panel Discussion on Diversity in Contemporary Myanmar
DESCRIPTION:Myanmar/Burma is an incredibly diverse country\, but this cultural richness does not come without a number of serious political challenges. The democratic transition leading to the landslide victory of the National League for Democracy and its President and long-time opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi\, while bringing hopes of freedom\, transparency and good governance has also exacerbated ethnic and religious tensions\, especially to the Muslim Rohingya community and other ethnic groups in the border area. \nIn this context\, a group of researchers and artists from Myanmar as well as other countries have joined in a transmedia effort entitled  “One Myanmar” to depict national diversity in its broad sense (http://one-myanmar.com) and which was supported by the French Embassy in Myanmar\, France 24\, Sathi Om and Secours Catholique. \nThe multi-media event on 18 December 20I6 at 10.30AM-12.30AM at SEA Junction discusses the key issues of diversity in contemporary Myanmar and presents the products of the “One Myanmar” process in Its three complementary and interacting formats. More specifically the tentative program consists of: \n\nScreening of “The Voices of Change” – a documentary focusing on civil society voices during the transition\nPanel Discussion on Diversity in Contemporary Myanmar\nPresentation of the picture book “The Faces of the Burmese Transition” and exposition of selected photographs (see http://seajunction.org/gallery/sea-junction-activities/one-burma/)\nPresentation of “Unity and Diversity\, the Challenges of Burmese Transition” a political essay analyzing the political dimension of diversity”.\n\nThe panel speakers include: \n\nThin Thin Aung\, Director of Mizzima\, an independent media organisation on Myanmar\, playing a vital role in building democracy and informing citizens.\nCarine Jaquet\, an independent researcher on social and political issues in Myanmar since 2005 and initiator of the One Myanmar Project and author of the political essays and the writings of the photo book.\nThet Oo Maung\, a well known photographer and video documentarist based in Yangon (thetoomaung.) who participated in the One Myanmar effort. See also http://www.mmtimes.com/index.php/lifestyle/22152-thet-oo-maung-rebel-with-a-cause.html.\n\nA limited number of copies of the political essay will be available at SEA Junction for free distribution\, while the photo book will be on sale and a percentage will be donated to SEA Junction for its activities. \nOrganizer: \nSEA Junction — OUR Venue to Connect on Southeast Asia \nPhoto: Reading Democracy by Rodolphe Chauvin \nShare on FacebookTweetFollow usSave
