SUMMARY:Painting Exhibition “Perempuan-Perempuan Menggugat (Women of Indonesia Accuse) by Seruni Bojawati at Cemara 6 Gallery in Jakarta
DESCRIPTION:SEA Junction is expanding its reach by holding events in other Southeast Asian countries in collaboration with local partners. On 21-31 August we will collaborate with Cemara  6 Gallery in Jakarta in organizing the painting exhibition “Perempuan-Perempuan Menggugat” (roughly translated as “Women of Indonesia Accuse” by Seruni Bodjawati and the launch of a book with the same title illustrated by Seruni and written by Esthi Susanti Hudiono. \nThese two events\, as well as the series of activities planned during the exhibition\, are an important testimony to the leadership of women in Indonesian history. The paintings portray 29 women leaders from pre-colonial and the Dutch East Indies times to the present mostly with red-tinted backgrounds and surrounded by symbols and their life and work. These vivid paintings invite the public to remember and appreciate the contribution of women in the development of Indonesian society. Their role in specific sectors and for the country ought to be celebrated and reflected upon by asking why they and their accomplishments often escape attention. Why are they generally not recognized by the public and if recognized are not necessarily appreciated? \nMore than a thousand seminars\, this exhibition can shatter the impression that feminism is a Western culture and that ‘indigenous’ values relegate women to the domestic sphere. The portrayed women all questioned the power of men in their own way.  This exhibition also reminds us that the women’s movement in Indonesia existed well before the Indonesian state was established. So\, it needs to be questioned why these valuable experiences are not recognized as ‘own’ to Indonesia. These and related questions become particularly relevant in the context of today’s Indonesia as the rampant radicalization and identity politics make women the target of efforts that aim to reduce their roles and reduce their space. The exhibition thus not only lend legitimacy and celebrates women leaders\, but is also a demand for a more just future. \nOpening Exhibition \n7PM at Cemara 6 Gallery \nLocation \nCemara 6 Gallery\nJl.
