SUMMARY:Panel Discussion "Glimpses of Southeast Asia in Reverse Glass Paintings"
DESCRIPTION:Among the cultural treasures of Southeast Asia\, reverse glass paintingsare still relatively unknown to the art community and the general public. The technique — where an image is painted onto glass to be viewed from the other side — originated in medieval Europe before spreading to India and China and then to selected countries in Southeast Asia through trade routes\, but much still remain to be researched. \nThe panel to be held at SEA Junction on 16 June at 6PM aims to highlight the beauty and variety of glass paintings and advocate for greater interest and study of this precious and vulnerable art form. The presentations will discuss the different traditions of glass paintings in the region and explore what is known of their history and their socio-cultural as well as artistic and spiritual dimensions.
