SUMMARY:Panel Discussion "Glimpses of Southeast Asia in Reverse Glass Paintings"
DESCRIPTION:Among the cultural treasures of Southeast Asia\, reverse glass paintingsare still relatively unknown to the art community and the general public. The technique — where an image is painted onto glass to be viewed from the other side — originated in medieval Europe before spreading to India and China and then to selected countries in Southeast Asia through trade routes\, but much still remain to be researched. \nThe panel to be held at SEA Junction on 16 June at 6PM aims to highlight the beauty and variety of glass paintings and advocate for greater interest and study of this precious and vulnerable art form. The presentations will discuss the different traditions of glass paintings in the region and explore what is known of their history and their socio-cultural as well as artistic and spiritual dimensions. More specifically the speakers and topics are as follows: \nIntroduction to Reverse Glass Paintings and their Possible Ways to Southeast Asia \nJérôme Samuel\nNational Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations/INALCO \nLooking Beyond the Glass\nCatherine Raymond\nCenter for Burma Studies\, North Illnois University \nReverse Glass Paintings in Vietnam\nVu Phuong Nga\nVietnam Museum of Ethnology \nSearching the Surviving Reverse Glass Paintings and Artists in Myanmar\nTin Naing Win\nUniversity of Mandalay \nIndonesia’s Glass Paintings\nRosalia Sciortino\nInstitute for Population and Social Research\, Mahidol University & SEA Junction \nThis panel for the general public complements a more academic panel that will be held on the same topic (but with different presentations) at the 3rd SEAMEO SPAFA International Conference on Southeast Asian Archeology (SPAFACON2019) on 17 June (for more info see http://www.seameo-spafa.org/conference2019/) \nBouraq\, East Java Indonesia (O’ong Maryono & Rosalia Sciortino Collection) \nThe event is free\, but donations are most welcome to enable SEA Junction to continue its activities and keep events accessible to the public. \nFor information/reservation for our events please email southeastasiajunction@gmail.com or phone/wa: +66970024140 \nOrganizer  \nSEA Junction\, OUR Venue on Southeast Asia \nSEA Junction aims to foster understanding and appreciation of Southeast Asia in all its socio-cultural dimensions –from arts and lifestyles to economy and development.
