SUMMARY:Panel Discussion on Street Vendors and the Right to the City
DESCRIPTION:Our series on street food\, a collaboration between SEA-Junction and Beyond Food\, focuses on how street food is embedded in the functioning of cities and highlights the link of street food with other urban dimensions such as use and design of public spaces\, urban safety\, urban formal economy\, and right to the city among others. Our first event focused on the economic implications for consumers and vendors of an eventual disappearance of street food. Our second event looked at how spatial arrangements (banning\, eviction\, zoning and such) by the municipal and national government impact on the physical space of street vendors (not only food) and how they try to negotiate with the authorities for survival. \nOur next event\, on 29 March at 6.30 PM will discuss issues related to the right to the city from the perspective of the street vendors and street food. The focus will be on the right of street vendors\, including street food vendors\, to be active members of the city whose contributions\, needs\, and voice need to be acknowledged and incorporated into the urban policies needed to achieve an inclusive and sustainable future for Bangkok.
