SUMMARY:Panel Discussion “Rebuilding Lives”
DESCRIPTION:Thailand became a state party to the UN Convention Against Torture and other Cruel\, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT) in 2007 and submitted its first report of the implementation under CAT in 2011. One year later\, it also signed the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED) in 2012\, yet to be ratified. In 2014\, a bill was drafted on the prohibition and prevention of torture and enforced disappearance bill\, which is now waiting for review and final approval. \nCivil society has taken an active role to encourage compliance with these commitments to end CAT\, make perpetrators accountable\, and rehabilitate victims by raising public awareness and advocating for change. As the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture held annually on 26 June approaches\, the Cross-Cultural Foundation CrCF –one of the organizations at the forefront of these efforts— in collaboration with the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) plans to hold a panel discussion at SEA Junction on 18 June at 6PM. The panel\, entitled “Rebuilding Lives” –in reference to the 2006 commemorative report of the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture– will discuss the current situation in the country and what can be done to improve it and support the victims and their families’ healing process.
