SUMMARY:Panel Discussion “The Hidden Dimensions of Poverty in Asia”
DESCRIPTION:In Asia\, absolute poverty has sharply declined\, but relative poverty remains entrenched. Various types of poverty alleviation programs have been implemented both by governments and non-government organizations in the realms of health\, housing\, education and economic empowerment. However\, like in others countries worldwide\, the blind spot of these programs remains at what do people\, who actually live in poverty\, say about how themselves are affected by poverty? How do they define and assess their situation?  \nThe panel on 14 November at 6 PM at SEA Junction aims to highlight the urgent need for a better understanding of the multiple ways people experience poverty and the importance of assessing with the concerned people\, the often – overlapping deprivation they face. The panel is organized by All Together in Dignity or ATD Fourth World and is based on its recognition that all persons living in poverty have an untapped knowledge. From their life experience\, they possess insights into the operational problems that arise from the way development policies are often designed and applied\, and have valuable ideas on how these problems might be addressed and if given a fair opportunity they can contribute with essential understandings. When complemented by the knowledge\, representations and practices of other involved stakeholders\, it can culminate into a comprehensive and holistic response\, which is liable to make policies and programs more appropriate and efficient. She works on policy research and engagement in relation to environmental issues.  \nBoonlert Visetpricha \nBoonlert is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology at Thammasat University. He is interested in urban anthropology\, marginalized people\, violence and social suffering in Southeast Asia with a particular focus on the Philippines.  \nClaude Heyberger \nClaude is a regional delegate of ATD Fourth World in Asia.
