SUMMARY:Post-Doctoral Researcher in Islamic Manuscripts of Sumatra
DESCRIPTION:Contract Type: 3 years Fixed-term \nLocation: Bloomsbury\, London \nHours: 35 per week  \nWe are seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Researcher (PDR) in Islamic Manuscripts of Sumatra to contribute full time for three years on the Leverhulme Research Leadership Award project\, “Mapping Sumatra’s Manuscript Cultures.”  \n About the Role  \nIn this role\, you will be responsible for co-leading Case Study 1 (Acehnese private collections digitised in EAP329)\, including the following deliverables:  \n\nResearch and writing of an article on the manuscripts from this case study;\nProject website development and provision\, including database and website design\, organising manuscript digitisation\, developing the online Jawi teaching module\, and collation and analysis of manuscript metadata;\nAssisting the PI in running the community-sourcing element of the project\, including conducting outreach events\, either in South East Asia or online;\nAssisting in organising and running the workshop in Year 2 of the project\, and in producing the resulting publication;\nContributing to research and dissemination related to the project’s other case studies;\nCollaborating with the PI on producing finished transcriptions and editions of key texts. \n\nYou will be expected to conduct field and archive research as necessary\, of about two-three months during the duration of the project. Additional travel may be required to help disseminate the work and results of the project at related workshops and conferences.  \nYou will need to support the Principal Investigator in realising the overall vision for the project\, to demonstrate creativity and initiative\, and to work effectively and collaboratively with other members of the team.  \nAbout you  \nIdeally you will:  \n\nHold a PhD\, or be very close to completion of a PhD\, in a relevant subject (i.e. philology\, codicology\, textual or literary analysis\, history and/or ethnography utilising Islamic manuscripts in Malay and/or Arabic and/or other relevant languages).\nDemonstrate evidence of excellent analytical skills in PhD thesis and other publications\nShow a clear understanding of the culture and environment of a research-intensive university or similar research or enterprise organisation\nHave specialist knowledge of and interest in Islam and manuscript studies in South East Asia\, including advanced proficiency in Indonesian/Malay\nBe able to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English and Indonesian/Malay\nHave advanced proficiency in Arabic\nHave experience working on digital humanities projects\, or willingness to learn the necessary skills\nShow evidence of the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues\, students and external funders. \n\nHow to Apply  \nTo apply\, please upload a copy of your CV and supporting statement in one document.
