DESCRIPTION:Public Lecture “The Making of Yangon Echoes: Doing Oral Histories and Heritage Reseach In Myanmar” by Virginia Henderson & Tim Webster\n \n  \nI Can Defend Myself: Helen and Kitty\, Shwe Taung Dan Street \n  \nThe public talk by Virginia Henderson and Tim Webster will be an exploration of notions and values of heritage and home\, based on their book “Yangon Echoes”. They will also delve into what it implies to do oral histories and heritage research in Myanmar as a country in transition. During the talk images will by shown on the monitor\, with short audios played at the end\, and examples of the book photographs will also be showcased. Few copies of the book will also be available. \n  \nFallen Angel: Steel beams from Middleborough comprise the skeleton of Balthazar’s building \n  \nYangon Echoes is a popular history of buildings\, charting social space and urban folklore linking past to present via living memories. This illustrated anthology of oral histories explores everyday life through domestic connections to old places. The personal stories offer insight into what has happened and is happening to the city\, and about people’s  thoughts and feelings of living through Yangon’s emergence from decades of isolation to engagement with a rapidly spinning world. \nThe book is a collaboration of Virginia Henderson and Tim Webster. Virginia Henderson works with local communities and development agencies to facilitate and document cultural projects. Raised in rural Southland\, New Zealand\, she has a doctorate in architectural heritage management\, is an oral historian and has lived in Southeast Asia more than 25 years. Tim Webster is a writer and photographer who specializes in archival heritage documentation and environmental portraiture. His extended research into the lives of people working in the Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne is being published by Thames & Hudson in 2017. Tim’s background is physics and mathematics\, journalism and education.
