SUMMARY:Public Talk “Pro-ISIS Networks in Southeast Asia” by Sidney Jones
DESCRIPTION:In light of the Sri Lankan bombings\, recognized expert Sidney Jones will give a public talk at SEA Junction on 30 May at 6PM examining pro-ISIS networks in Southeast Asia. She will be\, looking at what their aspirations\, capacity and regional linkages are and try to understand why support for ISIS endures in Southeast Asia (and elsewhere)\, even after its losses in the Middle East\, and how some of these cells might evolve. She argues that despite the difficulty of eradicating violent extremism\, Southeast Asia is more likely to remain a backwater of the global jihad rather than a “second front” as some have suggested. Jones will also explore some of the differences between movements like ISIS based on radical ideologies and ethno-nationalist insurgencies\, and how understanding those differences is critical to framing an appropriate government response.  \nSpeaker short profile \nSidney Jones is founder and director of Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict (IPAC)\, a Jakarta-based NGO. From 2002 to 2013 she was based in Jakarta with the International Crisis Group\, first as Southeast Asia director\, then as senior adviser to the Asia program.  She is a recognized authority on terrorism in Southeast Asia and has also written extensively on ethnic\, communal and separatist conflicts elsewhere in the region\, including in Aceh and Papua. She previously was a Ford Foundation program officer in Jakarta and New York (1977-84); Amnesty International researcher on Indonesia\, the Philippines and the Pacific (1985-1988) and Asia director of Human Rights Watch (1989-2002). She also served as chief of the Human Rights Unit of the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor in 1999-2000. She holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in Oriental Studies and International Relations with a focus on the Middle East and studied for a year at Pahlavi University in Shiraz\, Iran in 1971-72. She has been a visiting fellow at Australian National University (1995) and UC-Berkeley (2012) and served as the George Soros Visiting Practitioner at Central European University in Budapest from January through March 2017. In 2006 Ms. Jones received an honorary doctorate from the New School in New York. \nMarawi Crisis (Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Marawi) \nThe event is free\, but donations are most welcome to enable SEA Junction to continue its activities and keep events accessible to the public. \nFor information/reservation for our events please email southeastasiajunction@gmail.com or phone/wa: +66970024140 \nOrganizer: \nSEA Junction\, OUR Venue to Connect on Southeast Asia (see https://seajunction.org) SEA Junction aims to foster understanding and appreciation of Southeast Asia in all its socio-cultural dimensions –from arts and lifestyles to economy and development.
