SUMMARY:SHAPE-SEA National Skills-based Training on Human Rights and Peace Education and Research
DESCRIPTION:Introduction \nThe Strengthening Human Rights and Peace Research/Education in ASEAN/Southeast Asia Programme (SHAPE-SEA) was born out of a desire by Southeast Asian human rights and peace scholars to establish ways to develop and strengthen the capacities and knowledge of fellow academics working in the region. It is a joint program of the ASEAN University Network- Human Rights Education Theme (AUN-HRE) and the Southeast Asian Human Rights and Peace Studies Network (SEAHRN). SHAPE-SEA is supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). SHAPE-SEA’s vision is to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights and peace in Southeast Asia/ASEAN through education and research. It aims to support research efforts that contribute to creating a culture of human rights and peace in Southeast Asia. \nOne of the main SHAPESEA’s activities is to increase research capacity by organizing National Skill-based Training on  Human Right and Peace Research with targeted participants from a particular country in partnership with a local institution. In 2025\, SHAPE-SEA intends to collaborate with the National University of Laos (NUOL) to conduct a national training to increase capacity of and build a  network of human rights academics and scholars from Lao PDR as an Academically Developing Country (LAC). In consultation with NUOL\,  this national training will cover both human rights education and research on human rights and peace in order to support scholars and graduate students in Lao PDR in the two critical areas of human rights and peace work. The national training will likely be conducted bilingually\, with modules designed to enhance participants’ knowledge of human rights and peace. These modules will be tailored based on survey results to address the participants’ most pressing needs\, such as identifying research gaps and supporting the development of research ideas and proposals\, including data collection\, analysis\, and writing. \nObjectives \nThe training aims to achieve several objectives: \n\nTo improve the research skills of scholars and graduate students in Lao PDR\, focusing on research methodology\, ethics\, and academic writing related to human rights and peace.\nTo strengthen participants’ knowledge and understanding of human rights and peace both at the national and regional level.\nTo foster collaboration and networking among researchers and institutions in Lao PDR and the broader Southeast Asian region.\n\nTarget Participants \nThe targeted participants for the research training are Laotian emerging scholars and graduate students (Master’s/PhD students) interested in and focused on human rights and peace studies. Participants may come from any institution or research center in Lao PDR and will be able to maximize their skills and knowledge through SHAPE-SEA activities fully. SHAPE-SEA will launch a call for participants. At least 15–20 scholars and students from Lao PDR will be selected as participants. SHAPE-SEA will share the announcement and registration form through social media and its website. \nTime and Place \nDate: 26-28 March 2025 \nLocation: Vientiane\, Lao PDR \nShare on FacebookTweetFollow usSave
