SUMMARY:Call for Documentary Visual Documentary Project 2016 “Politics in Everyday Life in Southeast Asia”
DESCRIPTION:Southeast Asia is rich in its diversity of ethnic\, religious and cultural composition. The region has maintained the coexistence of such diversity while at the same time achieving economic progress and becoming a hub for the flow of people\, goods\, money and information. Yet at present\, the region is also confronted with serious issues such as the decrease of biodiversity and tropical forests\, disasters\, pandemics\, aging population\, ethnic and religious conflicts\, economic differentiation and poverty. In the face of this\, how is coexistence and sustainability possible despite the diversity that exists? How can we make public resources out of the region’ s social foundations which are the basis of people’ s everyday lives? And\, how can we connect these in a complementary way to existing systems of governance towards solving the problems and issues mentioned above? \nIn order to address these questions in the context of Southeast Asia\, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies\, Kyoto University has initiated “Visual Documentary project” which explicitly examines everyday life through a visual approach since 2012. This project aims to use visual forms of expression to complement the growing literature that exists on Southeast Asian societies. From 2014\, the Japan Foundation Asia Center joins this project as co-organizer to help widely promote the richness of Southeast Asian cultures to people in Japan. As of 2016\, the project has linked up with numerous film schools in the region to help strengthen the documentary filmmaking network. \n

SUMMARY:The Head Foundation "Imagine the future of Asia" Essay Competition 2016
DESCRIPTION:The HEAD Foundation is proud to present its inaugural essay competition – “Imagine the Future of Asia”. This crowdsourcing ideation exercise aims to draw from ASEAN youths\, original ideas for potential research topics and other projects at the Foundation. It aims to look for fresh\, innovative ideas centred around the theme of Human Capital and Education for Asian Development. \nFor developing countries in Asia\, one of the strongest and clearest strategies to move up the next rung of the social and economic ladder is focused investment in its people. Be it from ASEAN countries caught in the middle-income trap or to emerging countries\, such as India and China\, establishing effective processes for quality human capital development is key. However\, as ASEAN is broad and diverse\, there is no singular\, straightforward strategy. Coupled with the presence of intricate social\, economic\, political\, cultural and psychological nuances\, there are both challenges and opportunities for governments and stakeholders alike to shape a path that will meet the needs of a sustainable future. \nCrucial to this conversation are the voices of youth. In addition to the presentation of fresh perspectives and ideas\, a country’s youth are the bastion of future change-makers and are stakeholders in the nation. Although they are not experts in research or policymaking\, the youth are an important constituent that will be able to contribute because they are the receivers of human capital and education policymaking.  While the mission of Human Capital and Education for Asian Development is the thematic background of this competition and the Foundation\, we are also keenly aware that it is the youth who will eventually feel the impact of our work. Therefore\, we believe that listening to the youth is necessary and should be a key influencer in our research and advocacy plans for the region. \nPrizes\nParticipants stand a chance to win the following prizes: \n\n1st Prize US $1200\n2nd Prize US $1000\n3rd Prize US $800\n6 Commendation Prizes of US $400 each\n\nDetails of the Competition\nEssays should be original\, well-researched\, informed and they should provide new perspectives as far as possible. Further\, they should be written in a style that is accessible to a general audience. Guiding sub themes for the essay include human capital\, education (especially education quality and relevance)\, leadership\, sustainable development or a broad mix of the various sub themes. \nEssays can address any 1 out of 4 questions listed below: \n1  How do you envision changes needed in education in your country over the next 2 decades?\n2  How can education be reshaped to improve human capital development for your country’s socio-economic future?\n3  What is a key concern that your generation faces? How would you like your idea to be implemented?\n4  How can your country balance the needs of both economic competition and sustainable development? \nEssays are to be submitted in English and are limited to 1000-1500 words each. Each essay must be accompanied by a 150-word abstract or summary distilling the main idea. DESCRIPTION:SHAPE-SEA (Strengthening Human Rights and Peace Research/Education in ASEAN/Southeast Asia) was borne out of a desire by Southeast Asian human rights and peace scholars to establish ways to develop or strengthen capacities and knowledge of fellow academics working in the region. It is a joint programme of the ASEAN University Network- Human Rights Education Theme (AUN-HRE) and the Southeast Asian Human Rights Studies Network (SEAHRN). The programme is supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). \nSHAPE-SEA’s vision is to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights and peace in Southeast Asia/ASEAN through education and research. DESCRIPTION:6th International Symposium of Journal of Anthropology Indonesia\nDepartment of Anthropology\, University of Indonesia\n26-28 July\, 2016\nVenue: University of Indonesia\, Depok \nFirst Announcement\nCall for Panel Proposals \nPost-Reformasi Indonesia:\nThe challenges of social inequalities and inclusion \nSince Reformasi began in 1998\, Indonesia has experienced tremendous political\, economic\, social\, and cultural transformations. The nation has made significant progress in building a more democratic polity. The general election in 2014 was an important turning point. The newly elected president\, Joko Widodo (widely known as Jokowi)\, is the first with no ties to the Suharto regime which many people take as a positive sign of change. \nWhen we organized the first Symposium of Jurnal Antropologi Indonesia in 2000\, we were optimistic that Reformasi would improve the lives of Indonesians everywhere. In particular\, we believed that greater political equality and increased multiculturalism would lead to greater social and economic equality. However Indonesia is experiencing rising income gaps \, conflicts over access to resources and jobs\, increasing religious intolerance\, and continued marginalization of groups and individuals. Some scholars predict that these problems will continue because reformasi alone could not address the root causes of inequality. \nFor the 6th International Symposium of the Journal of Anthropology Indonesia\, we\ninvite Indonesian and foreign scholars to propose panels and papers to discuss pressing issues associated with inequality. The objective of the symposium is to explore the social\, political-economic\, and cultural dimensions of these inequalities\, their underlying causes\, and the challenges of addressing them. We seek contributions that critically analyze various forms and processes producing inequalities\, including government and non- government initiatives and interventions meant to address these problems. \nThe following are some key questions we hope participants will address. \n1. In what ways are ethnic\, gender\, and other forms of social difference linked to inequality?\n2. In what ways might corruption contribute to current patterns of inequality?\n3. How are socio-economic inequalities exacerbated by social and political responses to environmental factors? ( for example\, preventing and addressing environmental disasters\, climate change\, pollution\, or regional differences in resource endowments.)\n4. In what ways do people resist and find ways to overcome the inequalities that they experience in daily life?\n5. In what ways are processes of inequality being shaped by International agendas and national policies (for example ASEAN Free trade\, global investment\, international development agenda)? \nPossible panels and topics\nThe organizing committee has identified the topics for consideration.
