SUMMARY:Call for Documentary Visual Documentary Project 2016 “Politics in Everyday Life in Southeast Asia”
DESCRIPTION:Southeast Asia is rich in its diversity of ethnic\, religious and cultural composition. The region has maintained the coexistence of such diversity while at the same time achieving economic progress and becoming a hub for the flow of people\, goods\, money and information. Yet at present\, the region is also confronted with serious issues such as the decrease of biodiversity and tropical forests\, disasters\, pandemics\, aging population\, ethnic and religious conflicts\, economic differentiation and poverty. In the face of this\, how is coexistence and sustainability possible despite the diversity that exists? How can we make public resources out of the region’ s social foundations which are the basis of people’ s everyday lives? And\, how can we connect these in a complementary way to existing systems of governance towards solving the problems and issues mentioned above? \nIn order to address these questions in the context of Southeast Asia\, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies\, Kyoto University has initiated “Visual Documentary project” which explicitly examines everyday life through a visual approach since 2012. This project aims to use visual forms of expression to complement the growing literature that exists on Southeast Asian societies. From 2014\, the Japan Foundation Asia Center joins this project as co-organizer to help widely promote the richness of Southeast Asian cultures to people in Japan. As of 2016\, the project has linked up with numerous film schools in the region to help strengthen the documentary filmmaking network. \n

SUMMARY:Research Grant Programme 2017 by SHAPE-SEA
DESCRIPTION:SHAPE-SEA (Strengthening Human Rights and Peace Research/Education in ASEAN/Southeast Asia) was borne out of a desire by Southeast Asian human rights and peace scholars to establish ways to develop or strengthen capacities and knowledge of fellow academics working in the region. It is a joint programme of the ASEAN University Network- Human Rights Education Theme (AUN-HRE) and the Southeast Asian Human Rights Studies Network (SEAHRN). The programme is supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). \nSHAPE-SEA’s vision is to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights and peace in Southeast Asia/ASEAN through education and research. DESCRIPTION:Scenes from Pulau Buru: Tanah Air Beta (Courtesy of Rahung Nasution to the Jakarta Post) \n  \nPulau Buru: Tanah Air Beta (Buru Island: My Homeland) is a documentary film by chef and director Rahung Nasution that focuses on the island of Buru. Around the time of the September 30\, 1965 coup attempt\, which was blamed on the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI)\, Buru island became a prison for those who were accused of being related to the PKI often without any trial. \nTaking a human angle\, this documentary tells the story of the return to Buru island of former political prisoner Hersri Setiawan accompanied by his daughter and his friend and also former prisoner Tedjabayu. On the island\, Ken learns about her father’s past and emphasizes with his suffering from abuses. \nSEA Junction will screen the documentary\, in Indonesian with English subtitles twice on 3 and 4 September 2016 at 3.30-5.30PM. After the screening\, Director Rahung Nasution and Producer Whishnu Yonar will discuss with the audience about the film and the reasons behind. \nOn a separate event on 4 September at 10.30 until lunch\, the director Rahung Nasution will show his culinary skills\, introducing the variety of Indonesia sambel and how to make it. \n \n

SUMMARY:Introducing Indonesian Sambal
DESCRIPTION:Rahung Nasution will share his culinary skills introducing Indonesian sambal or chilli paste in a class at SEA Junction on 4 September at 10.30AM-noon. \nShort Bio Adapted from the Jakarta Post* \nRahung has spent over a decade making videos and documentaries\, writing essays and hosting events to raise awareness of Indonesia’s troubled past as well as the richness of the nation’s traditions. \nBorn on December 3\, 1974\, to rice and rubber plantation farmers in Batang Angkola in South Tapanuli\, North Sumatra; Rahung\, an eldest son\, spent his childhood cooking and caring for four younger siblings as his parents worked in the fields. \nIn line with the Batak tradition of “merantau” (wanderlust/migrating) he spent about two years living on the streets of Jakarta\, before studying again in Yogyakarta. There he established connections that enabled him to travel around the country and to learn about local cuisines and culture. \nIn 2010\, Rahung reinvented himself as what he calls a culinary activist in 2010. \nJoining a group called Aku Cinta Makanan Indonesia (I Love Indonesian Food)\, he began deepening his skills developed when cooking for his siblings in Sumatra\, Investigating culinary traditions across the archipelago\, especially that of remote ethnic communities\, documenting them and introducing then to local youths and the world. \nCombining his culinary and art and communication skills he has documented numerous traditional dishes in written notes and on his blog and plans to present them in the form of video documentaries. With a television cooking channel he works at a videography of traditional dishes in Indonesia that shows the biography of each traditional dish by visiting local kitchens where they are being cooked.  \nRahung aims for Indonesians to truly appreciate the nation’s culinary richness: “Each region always feels that its cuisine is superior to the others.
