SUMMARY:2016 NSC Archaeological Field School: Announcement and Call for Applicants
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nIn 2009\, the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Singapore) (renamed ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in August 2015) established the Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre (NSC) with the goal of reviving the ancient university of Nalanda as a center for culture and learning. The NSC conceived of an archaeological training program to support this project\, which would bring ten students to Cambodia and Singapore (spending approximately two weeks in each country). The funding for the project is provided by the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The teaching staff for the training program has included prominent researchers from Australia\, Cambodia\, Singapore\, and the United States. \nThis program is meant to contribute to an increased understanding of the ancient and intimate links that have connected Asian countries\, to emphasize the history of intra-Asian interactions over the past 2\,000 years\, and create a community of East Asia Summit (EAS) scholars. It will be through the participants that the training program will disseminate information on the Nalanda University project among the EAS countries’ citizens and governments. \nOther institutions within the EAS that collaborated in this project include the Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA)\, Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap (APSARA Authority)\, the Royal Academy of Cambodia\, Sydney University\, and the Australian National University. \nThe 18 East Asia Summit countries are: Australia\, Brunei\, Cambodia\, China\, India\, Indonesia\, Japan\, Laos\, Malaysia\, Myanmar (Burma)\, New Zealand\, the Philippines\, Russia\, Singapore\, South Korea\, Thailand\, the United States\, and Vietnam. \nSource: https://www.iseas.edu.sg. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture on Impacts of ASEAN Regional Integration on Health and Health Care for Students of Master Program in Global Health\, Thammasat University
DESCRIPTION:The lecture to be given by the Founder and Executive Director of SEA Junction\, Rosalia Sciortino for students of the MPH in Global Health on 2 December at 2-5pm at SEA Junction will provide an analysis of the impacts of ASEAN regional integration on health and health care in the region. It will discuss the suggested benefits and the potential risk of increased liberalization and commercialization of health care at the regional level. In particular it will be argued that the proposed trade in health products and services could have the following impacts \n\nExacerbate already substantial disparities in health and health care\, with concentration of resources in profit-making areas;\nExacerbate mal-distribution of personnel\nRising prices of products and services (transaction costs\, third agents)\nConflict of interest\nDisempowerment of patients and civil society\n\nThe MPH (Global Health) provides graduates with: broad and holistic public health perspectives and critical thinking\, knowledge\, skills\, and analytical capabilities; necessary for individuals to assume effective leadership in global health practice and governance; and to protect and promote the health of diverse populations at national\, bilateral and multilateral levels. \nThe students will be lead by their lecturer\, Visiting Professor Fabio Saini. \n \n
