SUMMARY:Naive Painting Class and Exhibition by Erica
DESCRIPTION:In the week of 25 February to 4 March\, painter Erica Hestu Wahyuni will provide a series of painting classes for both children and adults to introduce them to her colorful world. \nErica is well-known in Indonesia and internationally as “Art’s Most Playful Child” because of her distinct\, expressive character and naive paintings\, hundreds distributed among collectors and galleries in the country and abroad. Born in Yogyakarta\, Java in 1971\, Erica started painting in primary school\, joining a children’s drawing club (Sanggar Katamsi)\, which was taught by Suharto PR and Herry Wibowo – both established painters. Later she studied painting at the prestigious Indonesian Fine Art Institute in Yogyakarta\, Indonesia and Surikov Institute of Art\, Russia.  In 1993\, her work was selected for the International Triennale Competition of Painting in Osaka\, Japan. Erica held her first solo exhibition at the Purna Budaya in 1995\, officiated by the sultan of Yogyakarta\, which turned out to be a successful event. Since then she has exposed all over the world most recently in Austria and Vietnam. \nErica’s naive\, playful renditions have ascertained her reputation as one of the most sought-after contemporary artists in South East Asia. Each work contains interesting narrative qualities\, which reveal the worldview of the artist. Typically\, Erica depicts her own experiences in scenes that feature main characters within extremely busy environments. She uses simple deformed shapes and brilliant primary colors to further enhance the sense of animation\, and as a result her paintings appear to be fun and enjoyable. \nThe schedule of the painting workshops at SEA Junction is as follows: \n25 February 2017: 1-4PM \n26 February 2017: 1-4PM \n28 February 2017: 10.30-12.30AM \n1   March 2017: 5.30-7.30 PM \n2   March 2017: 10.30-12.30 AM \nThe workshops are open to both children and adults. DESCRIPTION:Deadline submission: 2 January 2017\nDate: March – September 2017\nVenue: Washington\, D.C.\, United State of America\nOrganizer: The East-West Center (EWC) \nThe East-West Center (EWC) accepts applications from scholars and analysts who wish to undertake research and writing on topics of relevance to contemporary US-Asia policy. We are particularly interested in proposals regarding key challenges in U.S.-Asia relations and possible responses and approaches to addressing those challenges. Specific topics of interest include but are not limited to: competing economic initiatives in Asia\, regional institutions as well as sustaining U.S. alliances and partnerships. \nThe fellowship finances residencies for a period of three months at the East-West Center in Washington in Washington\, D.C. Exceptional proposals that justify six months will be considered if funds and space allow. While in residence\, the fellows will complete an article or monograph to be considered for publication such as the Asia Pacific Issues series or the Policy Studies series. Selected participants must also publish at least one Asia Pacific Bulletin. The first full draft of the Asia Pacific Issues series or the Policy Studies series manuscript should be completed before the end of the residency period. Fellows must also give a public seminar on their topic. Alternative formats for the publication or public presentation may be considered on an individual basis\, but must be approved by the director of the EWC in Washington. \nThe fellowship includes a monthly stipend of US$2\,500 to $5\,000 (dependent upon experience) while in residence at EWC in Washington\, round trip economy airfare to Washington\, D.C.\, and reimbursement of any applicable visa fees. Residency may begin as early as March 2017 and extend through September 2017. All fellowships must conclude by September 30. Fellows are responsible for securing their own housing and medical insurance coverage during their term of residency. \nRequirements\nApplicants with or without a Ph.D. will be considered; those without a Ph.D. will be considered based on their relevant professional experience. SUMMARY:2017 ASEAN Symposium of Sociology: Sociology for Whom? Sociological Theory Building and Social Policy Making in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:Sociology as a modern discipline have developed only recently since the 19th century with thick European and North American societal\, philosophical\, and historical change. After the end of World War II\, sociology came to Southeast Asia through\, both local and foreign\, scholars educated in the western hemisphere and through states’ endorsement for positivistic development studies. Such background calls for questions concerning the universalistic nature of sociology and its course within the indigenous categories. \nThere are two fundamental issues in Southeast Asian sociology: first\, to construct local theories to advance sociology; and second\, to provide local policies to improve society. The first issue is a challenge to local sociologists to increase their contribution to local theory building that can enrich a more general sociological theories as shown in King’s “underdevelopment of Southeast Asian Sociology” (Victor T King\, 2008). On the second issue\, the local sociologist are actually involved in social policy development and public advocacy or sociology for society (See Alfred McClung Lee\, 1976; Michael Burawoy\, 2004). However\, their policy analyses and recommendations on corruption\, poverty\, and social exclusion are not well disseminated in sociological forum and journals. \nThese two issues are immanently relevant notably when the 2016 ISA Forum has inscribed “The Futures We Want: Global Sociology and Struggles for a Better World” as its heading. Global sociology could only reign from the rich contributions of various sociological studies around the globe\, including Southeast Asian sociology-discourses\, grounded theories or empirical researches. On the other hand\, Southeast Asian sociologists seem to face a challenge as they are highly engaged in activism and academic practices but hardly making impact in theoretical discourse. \nThe symposium will invigorate such subjects through inquiries such as\, but not limited to:\nHow Southeast Asian sociologist could play roles in Southeast Asian societies? SUMMARY:Vietnam and Korea as "Longue Durée" Subjects: Negotiating Tributary and Colonial Positions
DESCRIPTION:The conference\nComparative studies are located at the heart of humanities and social science studies (Détienne 2000\, Werner and Zimmermann 2004; Felsky & Friedman 2013)\, particularly in area studies (Anderson 1998\, Lieberman 2009). In that field especially\, implicit or explicit comparisons often determine certain conceptions of regional and sub-regional orders. For example\, the study of East Asia is implicitly situated within a comparative approach to China and the Sinitic culture. What other “strange parallels” (Lieberman) could possibly be operational to set a “comparative gesture” (Robinson 2011) that would not be determined by usual ‘silo-style’ conceptions of Asia? How to trigger new connections and parallels in area studies? \nIn partnership with a number of universities and institutions\, IIAS and its partners set out to address this “comparative gesture” by initiating a deliberate by-pass of dominant geometries and meta-narratives. One way to do so will be by organizing conferences or other forms of interactive platforms that would explore unexploited or only partially studied parallels and connections. In doing so\, it will not only seek to contribute to renew how ‘Asian studies’ is methodological framed. By identifying new articulations beyond established approaches of global history\, it seeks to underscore the intellectual merits – as well as limits – of comparisons as a social science and humanities method. \nConference 1:\nVietnam and Korea as Longue Durée Subjects: Negotiating Tributary and Colonial Positions\nThe first proposed event will focus on Korea and Vietnam\, two major regional nations and societies in Asia: as great kingdoms in the pre-modern period they developed\, sometimes within and sometimes outside of the Sinitic “tributary” system\, strong political organizations and original civilizations. The vicissitudes of the modern and contemporary periods\, first with the experience of colonial subjugation\, then international warfare and civil conflicts resulting in division of the two countries set much connections and parallels in the two countries’ trajectories. Today\, Vietnam and Korea continue to stand at the edge of the two great ideological systems that shaped the twentieth century\, socialism and capitalism\, yet in a divergent ways – Vietnam being reunified and having entered post-communist-pro-capitalist State authoritarianism while Korea remains divided between two models of statehood and governance. \nThe conference is conceived as an exploratory exercise to identify points of connections in which scholars of Vietnam and Korea could confront their work and engage their paradigms. As an ongoing project historically grounded with contemporary perspective situated within the larger Asia-global spectrum as well as for practical sake\, the first part of the conference entitled Vietnam and Korea as Longue Durée Subjects: Negotiating Tributary and Colonial Positions will focus on two conventionally agreed historiographies of the countries’: their ‘pre-modern’ and ‘colonial’ periods. An underlying question this conference aims to address will be: How the Korean and Vietnamese states and their civil societies\, concepts that shaped during the tributary system\, became formulated during the modernization period? \nVarious approaches and disciplines are invited to interact. \nTopics that would be particularly relevant for the conferences include – but should not be restricted to – the following: \n\nAncient kingdoms: indigenization of Sinitic culture and resources; articulation with vernacular cultures (e.g. indigenous religious systems and beliefs);\nPre-modern urban cultures\, bureaucracies\, statehood;\nWays of dealing with the world and China: diplomatic cultures and techniques\, exchange\, commerce\, piracy;\nWestern incursions and missionary experiences in Korea and Vietnam\nLooking at China\, Japan and other Asian countries from Korea and Vietnam;\nWriting and languages (relation to Chinese writing systems\, and vernacularization processes; linguistic innovations and hybridization);\nColonial experiences\, including differences of governmentalities\, processes of modernization; cities and modern urban cultures; transcultural experiments; forms of political (and cultural) resistance and contestation; new cosmopolitanisms.\n\nIndividual presentations may not be restricted to works explicitly comparing Korea and Vietnam\, yet presenters have to bear in mind the ultimate purpose of framing debates in comparison between the two Asian countries and their societies. Likewise\, studies from scholars specialized on China\, Japan\, and other Asian countries are welcome\, provided they contribute to the general problematic of the workshop. Junior scholars are particularly encouraged to submit abstracts. \nA second part of the conference\, focusing on the contemporary Korean and Vietnamese conditions\, from 1945 onward\, will be held in Korea the following year. \nRequirements\nPaper proposals should be submitted via the form available on our website by Tuesday 5 July 2016.
