SUMMARY:The Asia Studies Fellowship at the East-West Center in Washington\, D.C.
DESCRIPTION:Deadline submission: 2 January 2017\nDate: March – September 2017\nVenue: Washington\, D.C.\, United State of America\nOrganizer: The East-West Center (EWC) \nThe East-West Center (EWC) accepts applications from scholars and analysts who wish to undertake research and writing on topics of relevance to contemporary US-Asia policy. We are particularly interested in proposals regarding key challenges in U.S.-Asia relations and possible responses and approaches to addressing those challenges. Specific topics of interest include but are not limited to: competing economic initiatives in Asia\, regional institutions as well as sustaining U.S. alliances and partnerships. \nThe fellowship finances residencies for a period of three months at the East-West Center in Washington in Washington\, D.C. Exceptional proposals that justify six months will be considered if funds and space allow. While in residence\, the fellows will complete an article or monograph to be considered for publication such as the Asia Pacific Issues series or the Policy Studies series. Selected participants must also publish at least one Asia Pacific Bulletin. The first full draft of the Asia Pacific Issues series or the Policy Studies series manuscript should be completed before the end of the residency period. Fellows must also give a public seminar on their topic. Alternative formats for the publication or public presentation may be considered on an individual basis\, but must be approved by the director of the EWC in Washington. \nThe fellowship includes a monthly stipend of US$2\,500 to $5\,000 (dependent upon experience) while in residence at EWC in Washington\, round trip economy airfare to Washington\, D.C.\, and reimbursement of any applicable visa fees. Residency may begin as early as March 2017 and extend through September 2017. All fellowships must conclude by September 30. Fellows are responsible for securing their own housing and medical insurance coverage during their term of residency. \nRequirements\nApplicants with or without a Ph.D. will be considered; those without a Ph.D. will be considered based on their relevant professional experience. Applicants must be nationals of a country from the Asia-Pacific or the United States (see below for a list of eligible countries) and eligible to receive a fellowship stipend. Successful applications will include a completed online application form\, a full CV\, two letters of reference\, and a policy-relevant research proposal of five pages (double spaced). The proposal should discuss the policy problem or issue to be examined and a tentative hypothesis and arguments. A brief bibliography of the relevant literature is also welcome but not required. SUMMARY:Indonesian Reverse Glass Paintings Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:During 15-22 April SEA-Junction will offer workshops on reverse glass paintings and workshops on making and coloring wayang made by recycled plastic bottles  (‘garbage’ shadow poppets or wayang uwuh) facilitated by Indonesian painter Iskandar Harrdjodimuljo. His reverse glass paintings will also be exposed during the entire weeks. \n  \nIskandar Harrdjodimuljo is an autodidact painter and artist who has had many group and solo exhibitions in Indonesia and his work is appreciated by local and foreign collectors and art lovers. He cares about the environment and works with recycled material. He also offers workshops for children and adults on art with recycled material. The exhibition and workshops in SEA Junction would be for the first time outside Indonesia. \nThe schedule of the art workshops is in the table below. Please study it carefully because times are varied to accommodate diverse groups’ demands. The cost of the glass paintings workshop is TBH 750 inclusive all material. For the wayang classes\, participants are expected to bring plastic bottles of 1500ml\, while all other materials will be provided for a fee of TBH 500. SUMMARY:Angklung Class
DESCRIPTION:The angklung is a musical instrument popular across Southeast Asia\, which originated from the provinces of West Java and Banten in Indonesia. The instrument is made of bamboo tubes attached to bamboo frame that have a resonant pitch when struck. The musical sounds are attained shaking the instrument.  Musicians play different notes that combined make up a melody\, On November 18 2010 UNESCO officially recognized the angklung as a masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage\, \nSEA Junction in collaboration with the Indonesian Diaspora Network in Thailand will provide Angklung musical classes on 8 and 22 April at 1.30PM – 3.00PM.  Our teacher is Iwan Gunawa\, an art teacher at the Indonesian School of Bangkok (SIB) who has performed in many events in Indonesia and Thailand. \nClasses  consist of 1) Introduction to angklung; 2) Demonstration of angklung 3) Learning\, practicing and playing together and are open to a maximum of 20 participants (both children and adults. SUMMARY:(Un)Managing the Refugee Crisis in Southeast Asia?
DESCRIPTION:Policies and practices developed by ASEAN member states in managing refugee crisis are mostly marked by their changeable\, ad-hoc\, and optional characteristics. Since most of them are not signatories to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol\, any policies and practices that do emerge are not necessarily obligatory and compliance is not guaranteed. Moreover\, they tend to endorse the national interests\, particularly in terms of domestic security and development\, rather than to prioritize the interest and destiny of refugees. \nWith the major crisis of Rohingya refugees it has become clear\, however\, that conventional attitudes should be reassessed. Since the ending of the Indochinese refugee crisis\, almost none of the regional framework or collective instrument that had been used tto resolve the situation then has been applied. ASEAN has only focused on providing immediate and temporary relief and calling Special or Ministerial Meetings to discuss the Rohingya refugee crisis\, instead of  proposing preventive\, durable and innovative solutions. Most of the ASEAN countries approach the issue under the perspectives of rights of a child and human trafficking\, instead of under the perspective of rights of refugees and the stateless community. The absence of an operational regional framework implies that the region is poorly equipped to effectively address the refugee crisis in the region. Yet\, if no legal framework for protecting refugees in ASEAN is developed the human suffering of refugees will not be alleviated and the refugee crisis will continue to affect the region with no end in sight. \nThese and related concerns are discussed in the book Managing Refugee Crisis in Southeast Asia which has been recently launched at the Habibie Center in Jakarta. As the issue is regional in nature and requires regional awareness and responses\, SEA Junction has taken the initiative to organize a book discussion on 22 April at 4.30 PM.
