SUMMARY:The Asia Studies Fellowship at the East-West Center in Washington\, D.C.
DESCRIPTION:Deadline submission: 2 January 2017\nDate: March – September 2017\nVenue: Washington\, D.C.\, United State of America\nOrganizer: The East-West Center (EWC) \nThe East-West Center (EWC) accepts applications from scholars and analysts who wish to undertake research and writing on topics of relevance to contemporary US-Asia policy. We are particularly interested in proposals regarding key challenges in U.S.-Asia relations and possible responses and approaches to addressing those challenges. Specific topics of interest include but are not limited to: competing economic initiatives in Asia\, regional institutions as well as sustaining U.S. alliances and partnerships. \nThe fellowship finances residencies for a period of three months at the East-West Center in Washington in Washington\, D.C. Exceptional proposals that justify six months will be considered if funds and space allow. While in residence\, the fellows will complete an article or monograph to be considered for publication such as the Asia Pacific Issues series or the Policy Studies series. Selected participants must also publish at least one Asia Pacific Bulletin. The first full draft of the Asia Pacific Issues series or the Policy Studies series manuscript should be completed before the end of the residency period. Fellows must also give a public seminar on their topic. Alternative formats for the publication or public presentation may be considered on an individual basis\, but must be approved by the director of the EWC in Washington. \nThe fellowship includes a monthly stipend of US$2\,500 to $5\,000 (dependent upon experience) while in residence at EWC in Washington\, round trip economy airfare to Washington\, D.C.\, and reimbursement of any applicable visa fees. Residency may begin as early as March 2017 and extend through September 2017. All fellowships must conclude by September 30. Fellows are responsible for securing their own housing and medical insurance coverage during their term of residency. \nRequirements\nApplicants with or without a Ph.D. will be considered; those without a Ph.D. will be considered based on their relevant professional experience. Applicants must be nationals of a country from the Asia-Pacific or the United States (see below for a list of eligible countries) and eligible to receive a fellowship stipend. Successful applications will include a completed online application form\, a full CV\, two letters of reference\, and a policy-relevant research proposal of five pages (double spaced). The proposal should discuss the policy problem or issue to be examined and a tentative hypothesis and arguments. A brief bibliography of the relevant literature is also welcome but not required. SUMMARY:2017 Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship
DESCRIPTION:A. BACKGROUND\nThe Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship (IACS) has been conducted since 2003 and was initially offered to and participated by member countries of the South West Pacific Dialogue (SwPD); Australia\, New Zealand\, Papua New Guinea\, the Philippines\, Timor-Leste\, and the host Indonesia. \nBearing in mind the significance and advantages obtained from the program\, the scholarship was expanded over the years to include member countries of ASEAN\, ASEAN+3\, PIF countries\, as well as many countries from all regions in the world. In 2017 the participants of the scholarship will include participants from MIKTA countries (Mexico\, Indonesia\, South Korea\, Turkey and Australia). In the period of 2003 to 2016\, the scholarship has been awarded to 718 alumni from 63 countries. \nDue to the limited space and the vast amount of interest in the program\, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in cooperation with Indonesian Embassies and Consulates overseas\, hold a series of selection process. Taken into considerations are\, among others\, the awardees’ background\, gender\, regional representation and the interest to learn Indonesian culture. \nIn order to deepen the awardees’ understanding of Indonesian arts and culture\, and to enhance their skills for the final performance\, awardees will be divided and assigned by the organising committee to different arts centers for the duration of approximately 3 (three) months. The arts centers are located in 4 (four) cities\, namely: Denpasar (Bali); Makassar (South Sulawesi); Surabaya\, (East Java) and Padang (West Sumatera). \nAwardees will live within or around the arts center\, allowing for the chance to experience the local heritage and interact with the local community. Synergy between theory and practices shared inside and outside the arts center would undoubtedly become the driving force for shaping international cultures and norms\, and will eventually strengthen regional as well as global understanding and cooperation at a people-to-people level. \nB OBJECTIVE\nThe program serves to demonstrate Indonesia’s commitment as an initiator of the establishment of South West Pacific Dialogue and as the originator member of ASEAN in advancing the social culture cooperation in the region. The program also has an objective to encourage better understanding amongst participants from member countries through Indonesia’s immensely diverse arts and cultural heritage. Finally\, the programme aims to cultivate a culture of cooperation\, emerging from direct contact and sharing of cultures amongst people involved in the program\, leading to thriving diplomatic relations in the region and worldwide. \nC. PARTICIPANTS\nAwardees of the 2017 IACS will be targeted from many countries: member countries of ASEAN\, ASEAN + 3\, East Asia Summit\, ASEAN Dialog Partners\, ASEAN + European Union\, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation\, Asia-Europe Meeting\, Melanesian Spearhead Group and members of South West Pacific Dialog as the original participants of Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship. \nD. TIME\nThe non-degree arts and culture scholarship is offered for three months period of time\, starting on 6 May to 19 August 2017. \nE. LOCATION\nAfter 1 (one) week of orientation/introduction of the program in Jakarta\, awardees are given the art center designated for them by the organizing committee on the basis of their motivation\, interests\, gender\, regional dispersion etc. Decision of the designated arts center is subject to the discretion of the organizing committee. \nF. LIST OF COURSES\nBasically\, all awardees will learn about Indonesian arts and culture in general while their staying in the art centers. However\, some of the courses will be different in each arts center depending on the local arts and culture. For example\, In Surabaya\, the awardees will learn Javanese art and culture such as the process of batik and its significance; karawitan; traditional Javanese dance; and Javanese language. In Bali\, the awardees will learn Balinese art and culture\, namely Balinese dance and gamelan. Meanwhile\, in Makassar\, the awardees will learn the Sulawesi arts and culture\, as well as the local language. \nEach arts centre will also arrange special visit to several historical places as well as renowned tourist destinations for awardees. \nPrior to their residency at arts centres\, awardees should participate in one week orientation in Jakarta and will learn issues such as the Aim and Objectives of the Scholarship; Introduction to Indonesian Culture; Indonesian contemporary arts and cultures\, Information about the activities and curriculum offered by the art centers\, etc. \nAll awardees will perform in an arts and cultural night titled “Indonesia Channel” to remark the closing of the scholarship program. The “Indonesia Channel” is scheduled to be held on 15 August 2017. Awardees will return to their respective countries on the following days. \nG. SCHOLARSHIP COVERAGE\nThe scholarship will cover: \n\nTuition fee (including extra-curricular activities);\nA round trip economy class ticket;\nAccommodation (board and lodging);\nLocal transportation during program;\nHealth insurance (limited). DESCRIPTION:SEA Junction\, fully ‘Southeast Asia Junction’\, is proud to announce that it will be celebrating it’s 1st year anniversary on the 25th of June 2017. For a year already\, SEA Junction has strived to realize its aim of facilitating sharing of knowledge and experience on Southeast Asia\, whether that be about cultural\, economic\, political or development themes. We have provided an open library and reading room accessible to everybody with an interest in the topic and we have held a wide range of well-attended events such as book launches and fairs\, movie screenings\, public lectures\, arts and crafts workshops\, music concerts and panel discussions. \nThe hope is that over the next year\, SEA Junction can continue to serve as a knowledge and interaction hub for the region and broaden our reach to a wider audience. Learning from this first year we hope we can encourage more people with a variety of backgrounds and interests to not only utilize SEA Junction’s resources but contribute to the vast and ever growing network of ideas and resources that highlight the region’s diversity. \nFor the anniversary we are planning a two days event composed of open and closed events on 24 and 25 June 2017. SUMMARY:Seeking Health Across the Border
DESCRIPTION:More and more people travel across international borders for the purpose of receiving medical care. Medical tourism\, as this growing phenomenon is commonly called\, features prominently in Southeast Asia\, with Malaysia\, Thailand and Singapore among the top world destinations thanks to relatively lower costs of care\, cutting-edge equipment and expertise\, and visitors’ friendly attitude.  At the receiving end of services\, Indonesia is one of the major sending countries for outbound medical tourism as many Indonesians travel to Malaysia or Singapore in search of better care. In a context of increasing globalisation and privatization of health care\, the combination of demographic and epidemiological changes with higher spending capacity and greater demand for higher quality services fuel medical tourism. \nThis all makes of cross-border health care\, including medical tourism\, a priority business sector for the ASEAN Economic Community. Efforts are underway to facilitate cross-border investments in health facilities among ASEAN countries and to stimulate travel for medical purposes. While governments and the private sector highlights the economic gains and contribution to economic growth\, the impacts on health systems and public health are not clear\, and there are concerns that medical tourism may result in “a two-tier system\, with deluxe priority care for the better-off (including ‘medical tourists’) and a rump\, underfunded public sector for the rest” (Ormond 2014). \nThe panel discussion to be held at SEA Junction on 24 June at 5PM will be moderated by economist and President of the Thai Foundation Mingsan Khaosa-ard and will include the following speakers and proposed topics: \n\nJiruth Sriratanaban\, Associate Professor\, Faculty of Medicine\, Chulalongkorn University: “Medical tourism in Southeast Asia“\nChee Khoon Chan\, Visiting Scholar\, Faculty of Education\nUniversity of Malaya: “Ambiguities in the Malaysian medical tourism industry“\nRebecca Farber\, PhD candidate\, Faculty of Sociology\, Boston University: “Gendered cross-border care in Thailand“\n\nThis is the second of a series of events on movements of people in Southeast Asia entitled ASEAN People in Flux that is organized by SEA Junction in collaboration with the Heinrich Boll Stiftung Southeast Asia. The series\, consisting of seven interrelated events\, aims to examine the complexity of intraregional mobility spurred by regionalization efforts and to discuss the policies governing it. In particular\, by putting a spot on different kinds of people’s movements\, the series highlights the double standards in ASEAN approach. On one side\, ASEAN promotes “people to people connectivity” by facilitating movements for business\, study and tourism\, while on the other side it limits migration of much needed “un-skilled” workers to exploitative contract labor schemes and it refuses to recognize refugees\, asylum seekers and displaced persons. \nThe event is further part of the two day-celebration of SEA Junction’s first anniversary on 24-25 June.
