SUMMARY:The Asia Studies Fellowship at the East-West Center in Washington\, D.C.
DESCRIPTION:Deadline submission: 2 January 2017\nDate: March – September 2017\nVenue: Washington\, D.C.\, United State of America\nOrganizer: The East-West Center (EWC) \nThe East-West Center (EWC) accepts applications from scholars and analysts who wish to undertake research and writing on topics of relevance to contemporary US-Asia policy. We are particularly interested in proposals regarding key challenges in U.S.-Asia relations and possible responses and approaches to addressing those challenges. Specific topics of interest include but are not limited to: competing economic initiatives in Asia\, regional institutions as well as sustaining U.S. alliances and partnerships. \nThe fellowship finances residencies for a period of three months at the East-West Center in Washington in Washington\, D.C. Exceptional proposals that justify six months will be considered if funds and space allow. While in residence\, the fellows will complete an article or monograph to be considered for publication such as the Asia Pacific Issues series or the Policy Studies series. Selected participants must also publish at least one Asia Pacific Bulletin. The first full draft of the Asia Pacific Issues series or the Policy Studies series manuscript should be completed before the end of the residency period. Fellows must also give a public seminar on their topic. Alternative formats for the publication or public presentation may be considered on an individual basis\, but must be approved by the director of the EWC in Washington. \nThe fellowship includes a monthly stipend of US$2\,500 to $5\,000 (dependent upon experience) while in residence at EWC in Washington\, round trip economy airfare to Washington\, D.C.\, and reimbursement of any applicable visa fees. Residency may begin as early as March 2017 and extend through September 2017. All fellowships must conclude by September 30. Fellows are responsible for securing their own housing and medical insurance coverage during their term of residency. \nRequirements\nApplicants with or without a Ph.D. will be considered; those without a Ph.D. will be considered based on their relevant professional experience. Applicants must be nationals of a country from the Asia-Pacific or the United States (see below for a list of eligible countries) and eligible to receive a fellowship stipend. Successful applications will include a completed online application form\, a full CV\, two letters of reference\, and a policy-relevant research proposal of five pages (double spaced). The proposal should discuss the policy problem or issue to be examined and a tentative hypothesis and arguments. A brief bibliography of the relevant literature is also welcome but not required. SUMMARY:2017 Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship
DESCRIPTION:A. BACKGROUND\nThe Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship (IACS) has been conducted since 2003 and was initially offered to and participated by member countries of the South West Pacific Dialogue (SwPD); Australia\, New Zealand\, Papua New Guinea\, the Philippines\, Timor-Leste\, and the host Indonesia. \nBearing in mind the significance and advantages obtained from the program\, the scholarship was expanded over the years to include member countries of ASEAN\, ASEAN+3\, PIF countries\, as well as many countries from all regions in the world. In 2017 the participants of the scholarship will include participants from MIKTA countries (Mexico\, Indonesia\, South Korea\, Turkey and Australia). In the period of 2003 to 2016\, the scholarship has been awarded to 718 alumni from 63 countries. \nDue to the limited space and the vast amount of interest in the program\, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in cooperation with Indonesian Embassies and Consulates overseas\, hold a series of selection process. Taken into considerations are\, among others\, the awardees’ background\, gender\, regional representation and the interest to learn Indonesian culture. \nIn order to deepen the awardees’ understanding of Indonesian arts and culture\, and to enhance their skills for the final performance\, awardees will be divided and assigned by the organising committee to different arts centers for the duration of approximately 3 (three) months. The arts centers are located in 4 (four) cities\, namely: Denpasar (Bali); Makassar (South Sulawesi); Surabaya\, (East Java) and Padang (West Sumatera). \nAwardees will live within or around the arts center\, allowing for the chance to experience the local heritage and interact with the local community. Synergy between theory and practices shared inside and outside the arts center would undoubtedly become the driving force for shaping international cultures and norms\, and will eventually strengthen regional as well as global understanding and cooperation at a people-to-people level. \nB OBJECTIVE\nThe program serves to demonstrate Indonesia’s commitment as an initiator of the establishment of South West Pacific Dialogue and as the originator member of ASEAN in advancing the social culture cooperation in the region. The program also has an objective to encourage better understanding amongst participants from member countries through Indonesia’s immensely diverse arts and cultural heritage. Finally\, the programme aims to cultivate a culture of cooperation\, emerging from direct contact and sharing of cultures amongst people involved in the program\, leading to thriving diplomatic relations in the region and worldwide. \nC. PARTICIPANTS\nAwardees of the 2017 IACS will be targeted from many countries: member countries of ASEAN\, ASEAN + 3\, East Asia Summit\, ASEAN Dialog Partners\, ASEAN + European Union\, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation\, Asia-Europe Meeting\, Melanesian Spearhead Group and members of South West Pacific Dialog as the original participants of Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship. \nD. TIME\nThe non-degree arts and culture scholarship is offered for three months period of time\, starting on 6 May to 19 August 2017. \nE. LOCATION\nAfter 1 (one) week of orientation/introduction of the program in Jakarta\, awardees are given the art center designated for them by the organizing committee on the basis of their motivation\, interests\, gender\, regional dispersion etc. Decision of the designated arts center is subject to the discretion of the organizing committee. \nF. LIST OF COURSES\nBasically\, all awardees will learn about Indonesian arts and culture in general while their staying in the art centers. However\, some of the courses will be different in each arts center depending on the local arts and culture. For example\, In Surabaya\, the awardees will learn Javanese art and culture such as the process of batik and its significance; karawitan; traditional Javanese dance; and Javanese language. In Bali\, the awardees will learn Balinese art and culture\, namely Balinese dance and gamelan. Meanwhile\, in Makassar\, the awardees will learn the Sulawesi arts and culture\, as well as the local language. \nEach arts centre will also arrange special visit to several historical places as well as renowned tourist destinations for awardees. \nPrior to their residency at arts centres\, awardees should participate in one week orientation in Jakarta and will learn issues such as the Aim and Objectives of the Scholarship; Introduction to Indonesian Culture; Indonesian contemporary arts and cultures\, Information about the activities and curriculum offered by the art centers\, etc. \nAll awardees will perform in an arts and cultural night titled “Indonesia Channel” to remark the closing of the scholarship program. The “Indonesia Channel” is scheduled to be held on 15 August 2017. Awardees will return to their respective countries on the following days. \nG. SUMMARY:13th International Conference on Thai Studies: Globalized Thailand? Connectivity\, Conflict and Conundrums of Thai Studies
DESCRIPTION:Thai Studies and Global Connection \nFor many decades\, the academic field of Thai studies has served as a platform offering many forms of challenging\, conceptual\, and critical knowledge to scholars working in different academic disciplines\, yet who share the same interest in unveiling the complexity of Thai society. The field has allowed many scholars whose works are related to Thai society to engage in debate\, to learn and exchange from one another\, and\, on many occasions\, to produce ground-breaking conceptual and theoretical understandings about Thailand. Moreover\, the intellectual output produced through this kind of cross-disciplinary engagement often benefits the production of new knowledge in disciplinary-based studies. As Thailand changes\, Thai studies also strives and takes on new angles\, subjects\, and intellectual paradigms that are crucial to the development of the country. \nThe 12th International Conference on Thai Studies in 2014 was held at The University of Sydney under the theme “Thailand in the World.” The 2014 conference marked the situation of Thailand in globalized economic and cultural transactions\, called for a paradigm change in Thai studies that needs re-envisioning from the perspective of global connections\, and advanced the quest for new conceptual insights into the relationships between Thailand and the world. Thailand no longer exists as a self-contained and autonomous social and cultural entity\, especially so from the economic and technological development perspectives. Many new ideas and inventions emerging within Thai society in fact derive from complex interactions\, negotiations\, and integrations among various ethnic\, social\, and cultural beliefs and practices. The increasing liberalization of the economy of Southeast Asian nations also has the potential to drive Thailand to the crossroads of social\, economic\, and cultural transformation in the near future. As the world spins faster\, this complex formation of the knowledge of “Thailand” will only keep changing. \nConnectivity\, Conflict and Conundrums of Thai Studies \nThe development of Thailand in connection with the Southeast Asian region and the world has continued not without conflicts and conundrums. Many forms of transformation that take place in the different geo-cultural spaces popularly thought of as “Thai” involve agents\, organizations\, and forms of power that\, in fact\, originally belong to various indigenous ethnic\, cultural\, or national groups\, or even to the “global communities.” The Thai-self has been founded upon and thrived on the forces and dynamics within these various complex dimensions of connectivity. Most essentially\, this complex “connected Thailand” posits critical questions to the traditional paradigmatic thinking about Thai society\, particularly thinking that frames Thailand as a separate entity\, unnecessary to require intellectual engagement with the rest of the world. The 13th International Conference on Thai Studies aims to resolve this conflict between the hegemonic view of self-contained Thailand and global socio-cultural transactions by first\, reviewing and evaluating the existing landscape of knowledge in Thai studies. This stage will provide an opportunity for participants to take a step back to reconsider the problems of development of the field of Thai Studies. Second\, the conference will encourage participants to explore the unprecedented dimension of the intellectual inquiry of Thai studies\, especially the connectivity\, and conflicts and conundrums within that connection\, between Thai society\, the Southeast Asian region\, and the world. Through these two processes\, we hope the conference becomes a space where new forms of critical knowledge on Thailand emerge. \nNot only the theme of the conference—representing the attempt to connect the field of Thai studies with the world—but also the urge within the field is to connect and support contributions by the “new generation” of scholars working on Thailand: “new” of age\, approach\, culture or nationality. In the past decade\, the expansion of research programs in higher education focusing on Asian and Southeast Asian studies has produced many talented academics in many various disciplines from around the world. Coming from different geo-political and cultural backgrounds\, these scholars have helped transform Thai studies into an increasingly interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Within Thailand\, more postgraduates programs have emerged nationwide\, also producing a new generation of local-origin but internationally-minded scholars. Many of the works of these talented new local and international scholars have great potential in contributing to new and exciting forms of knowledge on Thai society in a global context. The 13th International Conference on Thai Studies recognizes and values this potential and aims to use the conference as a platform for these scholars to voice their new ideas and to (re)connect them with the already established scholars of Thai studies\, and vice versa. \nHosted by Chiang Mai University\, the conference aims to bring up to 600 Thai\, regional\, and international senior and junior scholars together to present their research works and works-in-progress in the form of academic papers\, and to get high-quality feedback during conference sessions engaged in discussions on Thailand in a globalized context. Thematic focuses of the conference include: \n\nThailand and Its Connectivity in ASEAN\nThai Economy and the Global Market\nReligion and Modernity in Thai Society\nCrisis of Democracy and Politics of Governance\nBorder Studies\, Border Trade\, SEZs\, and Border Conflicts\nGender\, Sexuality\, and Social Equity\nUrbanization\, Spatial Politics\, and Public SpaceN\nLanna Studies\nHistory and Public Memory\nLiterature\, Media\, and Popular Culture\nCrafts\, Artisans and Cultural Heritage\nMigrants\, Stateless People and Refugees\nHealth and Health Care Systems\n\nDespite these suggested themes\, the conference is by no means disregarding other issues related to socio-cultural or technological connectivity between Thailand and the region/world as unimportant. Participants can submit panels and papers with titles that may not exactly match these suggested themes\, yet represent current or critical issues which Thailand\, in connection with the region and world\, is undergoing. \nThe format of the conference will include 1) plenary sessions by keynote speakers who are leading scholars in Thai studies; 2) parallel sessions consisting of panels and groups of individual papers on various topics relating to Thailand; and 3) roundtable discussion sessions. \nSubmission \nWe open for two types of submission; 1) individual abstracts and 2) panel proposals. The submission of individual abstract and panel proposal can be made online on the conference website. Individual abstracts should not exceed 250 words. Deadline for individual abstract submission is 30st November 2016 and panel proposals is 31st August 2016. Notification of acceptance of proposals will be made by 31st January 2017. \nRegistration \nRegistration for participation will begin on 1st October 2016.
