SUMMARY:ASEAN CSR Fellowship 2018
DESCRIPTION:The ASEAN CSR Fellowship seeks to build up the next generation of ambassadors for responsible business in Southeast Asia\, harnessing the potential of the private sector in addressing key regional issues in anti-corruption\, environmental degradation and human rights. The Fellowship is part of ACN’s ongoing efforts to help practitioners re-define CSR\, away from its misconception that it is just corporate philanthropy and volunteerism\, towards the business responsibility to look beyond their bottom line and consider the social and environmental implications of their activities. The attention is shifted from how businesses spend money (charity) to how the money is made. \nA small team of high-potential individuals will be selected from business\, government and civil society\, to be equipped with in-depth theoretical and practical concepts in responsible business. The year-long journey will take Fellows to 3 countries across ASEAN\, spending 5 days each in Singapore/Malaysia\, Myanmar and Vietnam. Covering the full spectrum of ASEAN member states with varying levels of economic development\, the Fellowship starts at the heart of ASEAN’s business activity in Singapore/Malaysia\, before heading to the emerging economy of Myanmar and the manufacturing hub of Vietnam. Each week spent in the different countries will feature a series of study tours to meet top business leaders\, government representatives\, academics and civil society practitioners. Modules will also feature deep-dive topics\, delving into difficult issues such as the rights of migrant workers\, labor standards in the garment industry and responsible investment. SUMMARY:Call for Applications: Revealing Truth\, Reclaiming Justice: A Regional Short Course for Transitional Justice Strategies for Asian Contexts
DESCRIPTION:Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR) is pleased to announce a Short Course on Transitional Justice. This week-long course is designed to learn lessons from the field and affirm key principles and best practice for addressing unjust past. The measures of transitional justice include criminal prosecutions\, commissions of inquiry and “truth commissions”\, programmes aimed at individual and collective reparation\, and institutional reform. In the region\, countries such as Aceh (Indonesia)\, Timor-Leste\, Thailand and South Korea have established truth commissions\, and other countries and territories have the unrealised promise of a truth commission built into peace agreements or special autonomy settlements\, such as in Nepal and Papua (Indonesia). In terms of prosecution of perpetrators of serious crimes\, Timor-Leste\, Cambodia\, Indonesia and Bangladesh have conducted trials\, with differing outcomes. To date\, governments in Thailand\, Aceh and Nepal have provided some kind of interim relief for victims but there is yet an example of a comprehensive reparations programme in Asia. \nThe course includes experiences and lessons learned from other countries\, and focuses on how regional human rights mechanisms may contribute or challenge the pursuit of accountability for mass violations. AJAR will also invite experts from the field as resource persons\, to share their concrete experiences of working in difficult transitions. The course format includes a combination of lectures\, small group discussion\, simulations and exchange of practical experiences from the participants. The course is designed to allow for debate and exchange between participants\, including sessions dedicated to the sharing of country contexts and developing innovative strategies at local\, national\, regional and global levels. \nOne of the goals of this annual course is to produce a larger\, more effective group of Asian experts in transitional justice and other challenges commonly faced in transitional settings. The course aims to provide participants with a firm grounding in the basics of transitional justice and to understand the challenges\, options\, and implications of different approaches to the justice. SUMMARY:Shift Maps Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On 4 November 2017 at 5PM\, the month-long exhibition “Shift Maps” will be launched at SEA Junction exposing the personal live histories of refugees and migrants living in Bangkok as written and illustrated by them on palm leaf manuscripts made from the Talipot Palm\, also known as the ‘Shadow Palm’ (Corypha umbraculifera; Thai: Bai Larn). \nThe bulk of manuscripts were produced in two workshop sessions conducted by Bangkok-based artist Varsha Nair at SEA Junction on 26 and 28 October by a group of refugees and migrants composed of clusters of family members as well as young refugees on their own from a variety of countries including Vietnam\, Myanmar\, Sri Lanka\, Pakistan\, and Sudan. They worked with leaves to tell their personal stories\, reflecting about “who we are\, where we come from\, our connection with the past\, and present way of being”. Recording oral histories\, they drew and wrote their stories\, from memory and based on their current reality – life stories connected with location\, relocation\, dislocation – the physical\, emotional and psychological shifts – at times subtle and at times tectonic. \nAdditional palm works were created at a workshop for 365 Days: LIFE MUSE (Model study for Nongpo community’s foreign laborers)\, a project by Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture\, curated by jiandyin (Jiradej and Pornpilai Meemalai). \nThe Palm can be considered as being one of the first migrants in the world – dispersing itself by floating on the seas\, arriving in far-flung places and rooting down way before humans appeared on the scene. Palms continue to be an important part of our daily life. We also revered them using their leaves to record what was once oral history and sacred discourses\, as evident in traditional palm leaf manuscripts. This tradition is a common one that connects India\, Myanmar\, Thailand\, Cambodia\, Laos\, and Indonesia. \nIndividuals from different parts of the world who now find themselves in-between places created the palm leaf documents presented here. They can be seen as current records of flux and of memory – of horizons lost\, found\, and desired. \nAt the opening\, and intermittently during the course of the exhibition\, short videos created by some of the same refugees and some others will be shown. They were made as part of a research project conducted by Rebecca Warren\, in which several young refugees wrote and created digital poetry based on a poem by George Ella Lyon\, called ‘Where I’m From’. The poems explored the young person’s sense of identity\, memory\, and attempted to capture their journey through life with images and descriptions of things that they’ve felt\, sensed\, touched\, heard\, smelt\, seen\, the experiences that make us who we are. Irrespective of varying degrees of elaboration\, each is unique and poignant in its own way. \nThe opening will also feature a panel discussion including Varsha Nair\, Rebecca Warren as well as representatives of refugee organizations. \nThis event is the sixth of a series of events on movements of people in Southeast Asia entitled ASEAN People in Flux\, which is organized by SEA Junction in collaboration with the Heinrich Boll Stiftung Southeast Asia. The series consisting of seven interrelated events aims to examine the complexity of intraregional mobility spurred by regionalization efforts and to discuss the policies governing it. In particular\, by putting a spot on different kinds of people’s movements\, the series highlights the double standards in the ASEAN’s approach to mobility. \nOn one side\, ASEAN promotes “people to people connectivity” by facilitating movements for business\, study and tourism\, while on the other side it limits migration of much needed “un-skilled” workers to exploitative contract labor schemes and it refuses to recognize refugees\, asylum seekers and displaced persons. These double standards were clearly illustrated by the first event of the series on “refugee crisis in ASEAN” as contrasted to the booming industry of medical tourism discussed in the second event. The third event presented an additional dimension of policy discrimination from a gender perspective by focusing on women migrant workers in ASEAN\, while the forth focused on the often-neglected topic of pre-departure policies to protect migrants. The fifth event returns to explore privileged flows\, this time the facilitated intraregional movements of students\, as contrasted to the young refugees who tells their stories of dislocation and exclusion from education opportunities in this sixth event. \nContributors \nVarsha Nair was born in Kampala\, Uganda\, and studied at Faculty of Fine Arts\, Maharaja Sayaji Rao University\, Baroda\, India. DESCRIPTION:International Institute of Peace and Development Studies (IIPDS)\, Thailand and International School of Advance Studies (ISAS)\, Nepal are offering a 5-day training course on Results-based Monitoring and Evaluation including Project Planning and Designing. M&E has become common practice of civil society organizations\, international development agencies and NGOs to manage their projects and programmes effectively.
