DESCRIPTION:ASEASUK is offering bursaries to members to support research and impact activities in Southeast Asian Studies. The awards are available for travel and related expenses for activities taking place between 1 July 2017 to 31 July 2018.\nPermissible activities include: \n\nfieldwork in SE Asia or key sites in the diaspora;\nresearch visits to important regional archives\, museums\, collections\, exhibitions or performances (concerning but not necessarily located in SE Asia);\na visit for collaborative writing or artistic practice with an academic or practitioner colleague from another institution in SE Asia;\ndelivery of a paper at a regional academic conference;\ndelivery of a paper to an academic or practitioner audience based on research previously conducted on/in the region.\n\nAwards available: \n\nThree Postgraduate Bursaries (PhD\, MPhil or MRes students)\, up to £1000 each\nOne Early Career Award\, up to £1500\nOne Senior Award\, up to £2500\n\nApplication deadline: 30 April 2017. SUMMARY:Asian Graduate Student Fellowships 2018 (6 weeks In-residence)
DESCRIPTION:Duration: the Fellowship starts in June 2018 (6 weeks)\n  \nThe Asia Research Institute (ARI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications from citizens of Asian countries currently enrolled in a fulltime Master’s or PhD degree at a university in an Asian country (except Singapore) for consideration for the award of Asian Graduate Student Fellowships. Offered to graduate students working in the Humanities and Social Sciences on Southeast Asian topics\, the fellowship will allow the recipients to be based at NUS for an ‘in residence fellowship’ for a period of six (6) weeks. The aim of the fellowship is to enable scholars to make full use of the wide range of resources held in the libraries of NUS and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. \n  \nIntensive English Academic Writing Course\nA limited number of students may be selected to take part in a two-week long intensive course on English academic writing. This program is specifically intended for students who struggle with writing and/or communicating in academic English. You are asked to indicate in your application if you see a need for participating in this course. If you have already received training in this field or if you are a (near) native speaker you might not benefit from this course. Please note that those students who enroll in the English academic writing program will thus have two weeks less time to conduct research locally. It is therefore important that you consider carefully what is more important to you at this stage of your career. \n  \nRequirements & Expectations\nThe fellowship will commence on 18 June 2018\, and scholars are expected to finish a paper of 8\,000 words and make a presentation on their work at the “Singapore Graduate Forum on Southeast Asian Studies” to be organized from 23 to 27 July 2018. You are advised to have a draft of your paper ready before commencing the program. This will allow you more time to conduct research and interact with researchers locally. \nSuccessful candidates can expect the following benefits: \n\nA one-time allowance of SGD500.00\nA one-time round trip travel subsidy by the most economical and direct route (via budget airline if available) on a reimbursement basis upon being accepted for the fellowship.\nOn-campus accommodation will be provided.\nAccess to library and computer resources on campus. You can look forward to excellent library and internet computer facilities at NUS’ main library (https://libportal.nus.edu.sg/frontend/index)\, the library at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) (https://www.iseas.edu.sg/library) and the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library at the National Library (https://www.nlb.gov.sg) to facilitate your research for the dissertation. SUMMARY:The Night Crawlers of Manila: Photojournalism Against the Filipino War on Drugs
DESCRIPTION:The weekend of 9-10 December at SEA Junction is devoted to the Philippines and its current conditions. After the public lecture “Quo Vadis Philippines” on 9 December at 5PM by historian and former chair of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines\, Maria Serena I. Diokno\, on 10 December at 5PM\, photographer Raffy Lerma will talk about the work and mission of the “Night Crawlers of Manila”. \nThe Night Crawlers is an unofficial group of journalists\, some working for media agencies\, but mostly freelancers who cover the Philippine war on drugs. Since July 2016 they have done night shifts to document and report on extra-judiciary killings (EJKs) occurring in the streets of Metro Manila\, the grief of their families\, and the poverty and vulnerability they experienced. \nRaffy Lerma’s presentation will provide illustration of the war on drugs and explain what is moving the Night Crawlers\, stressing the role of photojournalism in providing evidences as well as giving a face to the victims and their lost lives beyond statistics. The ethics dilemma encountered and the emotional toll is taking on the group members will also be discussed. \nPhil Robertson\, deputy director of Human Rights Watch’s Asia division\, will then reflect on the war on drugs and its disregard of human lives and rights. Lessons from similar policies in Thailand and other countries will also be shared to give food for thought. \nThis SEA Junction event complements an exhibition “The Night Shift”\, which will start at FCCT on 1 December with a panel discussion by Raffy Lerna and other group members (see further://www.fccthai.com/items/2340.html ). Siaron\, a pedicab driver\, was killed by unidentified riding-in-tandem gunmen along Pasay Rotonda\, EDSA on July 23\, 2016. \nSpeaker Profile \nRaffy Lerma began his career in photojournalism as a student of the College of Fine Arts in the University of the Philippines Diliman. He worked as a staff photographer for the Philippine Collegian\, the official student publication of the university and later served as its Photo Editor in 2004. Lerma finished his Diploma in Photojournalism at the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University. He was also the Philippine representative in Hanoi\, Vietnam for World Press Photo – Asia Europe Foundation Forum for Young Photographers in 2004. For 12 years\, he worked as a staff photographer for Philippine Daily Inquirer covering the daily news beat in Metro Manila. As program manager of the UN Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking (UNIAP)\, he oversaw the successful negotiation of the first regional inter-governmental agreement on human trafficking in the greater Mekong sub-region.
