DESCRIPTION:ASEASUK is offering bursaries to members to support research and impact activities in Southeast Asian Studies. The awards are available for travel and related expenses for activities taking place between 1 July 2017 to 31 July 2018.\nPermissible activities include: \n\nfieldwork in SE Asia or key sites in the diaspora;\nresearch visits to important regional archives\, museums\, collections\, exhibitions or performances (concerning but not necessarily located in SE Asia);\na visit for collaborative writing or artistic practice with an academic or practitioner colleague from another institution in SE Asia;\ndelivery of a paper at a regional academic conference;\ndelivery of a paper to an academic or practitioner audience based on research previously conducted on/in the region.\n\nAwards available: \n\nThree Postgraduate Bursaries (PhD\, MPhil or MRes students)\, up to £1000 each\nOne Early Career Award\, up to £1500\nOne Senior Award\, up to £2500\n\nApplication deadline: 30 April 2017. DESCRIPTION:Myanmar studies among international scholars and researchers over the recent decades have been based in universities and institutions outside of Myanmar. Understanding of Myanmar Studies primarily dwelled on social science in Myanmar. However\, the scope of Myanmar Studies has been becoming widespread and developing into a variety of focuses in recent years. Today\, diversity of views and ideas has been emerging due to the impact of democratization process followed by socio-economic and political changes in Myanmar. Thus\, Myanmar Studies has become an umbrella term that can cover every disciplinary\, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research focusing on Myanmar. With recent democratic and political liberalizations\, it is the right time for the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to organize international conferences on Myanmar studies. \n“Reorienting Myanmar Studies in Myanmar” is a conference which is expected to serve as a platform that encourages a new direction in local and foreign scholarships on Myanmar. SUMMARY:Photo Exhibition “‘Unmentionable’: Rohingya Refugees in Cox’s Bazaar” by Mahmud Rachman
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom 6 to 18 February\, SEA Junction will present a photo exhibition tentatively entitled “’Unmentionable’: Rohingya Refugees in Cox’s Bazaar” by Bangladeshi photographer Mahmud Rachman. The context of the exhibition is the impact of the latest attacks against Rohingyas in Rakhine State\, which started on 25 August 2017 in retaliation for the raids on 30 police posts and an army base allegedly by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA). The large-scale destruction of Rohingya villages under the guise of military counter-insurgency operations has driven the population across the border into Cox’s Bazar\, Bangladesh. Persecution is of such intensity and scale that is has become one of the most serious humanitarian crises in the world today and the most serious in Southeast Asia. An estimated 655\,000 Rohingya have joined other refugees from previous waves bringing the total to an estimated 867\,550 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh (ISCG Situation Report 21 Dec 2017) who are traumatized\, have lost their livelihoods and assets and live in extremely difficult conditions lacking adequate food\, water\, sanitation and medical care and with glim hope of a better future. \nAlthough sex and age segregated numbers are still lacking\, it has been repeatedly observed that the majority of the refugees are women and children. They are disproportionately affected “by reinforcing\, perpetuating and exacerbating pre-existing\, persistent gender inequalities\, gender-based violence and discrimination” (UN Women). \nThe photos\, to be exposed in the 1st floor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC) and on SEA Junction in the 4th floor of BACC\, illustrate the camp conditions and the vulnerability of Rohingya refugees\, with particular attention to women and girls and their specific\, and too often neglected\, needs and rights. \nThe exhibition will be opened on 8 February 2018 with a panel discussion on the same topic comprising: \nMahmud Rahman\, “The Unmentionables” \nPhotographer MAP \nHtike Htike\, “Contributing Factors to the Crisis” \nResearcher and Activist \nOrla Murphy\, “A Children and Adolescent Girls Crisis” \nPLAN Bangladesh Country Director \nTBC\, “The Regional Geopolitics of the Crisis” \nThis event will also see the launch of a new series of activities by SEA Junction in collaboration with the TIFA Foundation entitled “Displaced and Uprooted” on displaced persons\, asylum seekers and refugees in Southeast Asia. Presented by TIFA Director Darmawan Triwibowo\, the series continues and deepen the discussion on forced and facilitated movements of people in the region initiated last year with the ASEAN People in Flux series. \nBrief Photographer Profile \nMahmud Rahman lives between Dhaka and Bangkok and works as documentary photographer on social issues. His major work includes: Bangladeshi women\, children in difficult circumstances\, trafficking of women and children in Bangladesh\, river gipsy\, indigenous people. Mahmud published several books (only available in Dhaka) as the end product of his self-assigned projects.
