DESCRIPTION:ASEASUK is offering bursaries to members to support research and impact activities in Southeast Asian Studies. The awards are available for travel and related expenses for activities taking place between 1 July 2017 to 31 July 2018.\nPermissible activities include: \n\nfieldwork in SE Asia or key sites in the diaspora;\nresearch visits to important regional archives\, museums\, collections\, exhibitions or performances (concerning but not necessarily located in SE Asia);\na visit for collaborative writing or artistic practice with an academic or practitioner colleague from another institution in SE Asia;\ndelivery of a paper at a regional academic conference;\ndelivery of a paper to an academic or practitioner audience based on research previously conducted on/in the region.\n\nAwards available: \n\nThree Postgraduate Bursaries (PhD\, MPhil or MRes students)\, up to £1000 each\nOne Early Career Award\, up to £1500\nOne Senior Award\, up to £2500\n\nApplication deadline: 30 April 2017. DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. SUMMARY:Workshop East Javanese Batik
DESCRIPTION:Batik is a well-known traditional fabric of Indonesia that employs a technique of applying wax-resist dyeing to the cloth either by drawing dots and lines with a spouted tool (canting)\, or by printing various motives with a copper stamp (cap). The wax-resist prevents dyes to penetrate\, so that only the parts without wax will be colored. Wax can then be removed with boiling water and a new color eventually applied until the design is completed. \nMost people are familiar with batik from Central and West Java\, but East Java has also many areas\, including Madura\, Sidoardjo\, Jember and Bondowoso\, where batik have been produced for centuries with patterns quite distinct from other parts of Java.  The three workshops to be held at SEA Junction on 2\, 3 and 4 March from 1 PM to 4 PM will introduce the participants to the East Javanese batik by having them practice the batik making process. \nEach class is complete in itself and starts from the applying of the wax to the already patterned cloth to the cloth being dyed and\, lastly\, to the taking away of the wax. Each participant will receive a small cotton cloth with motifs already designed by the instructor\, Ayu Christina\, a professional batik maker from Sidoardjo\, East Java. This is because of time constraints\, but if there is interest\, separate classes focusing on the design of the patterns will be help in the morning from 10.30 AM to 12 PM\, to be continued at 1-4 PM with the regular class. \nClasses are the same for all participants\, but there are three packages depending on the batik souvenirs that will be given: \n\nBasic Package: The instructor will explain all the steps and guide the participants until they complete the making of a small East Javanese batik table cloth. All the materials needed including the batik cloth\, the wax\, the colors and the canting will be provided. At the end of the class\, the participants can bring home the batik they made for drying. This package costs TBH 600\nShawl Souvenir Package: in addition to the teaching and material provided with the Basic Package the participant will also receive an East Javanese batik shawl of choice (among those available) 1.80 cm of length. This package costs TBH 800.\nBatik Cloth Souvenir Package: in addition to the teaching and material provided with the Basic Package the participant will also receive an East Javanese batik cloth of choice (among those available) of the size of 2 meters. This package costs TBH 1000.\n\nFor the additional design class a fee of TBH 150 is added to compensate the instructor.
