DESCRIPTION:ASEASUK is offering bursaries to members to support research and impact activities in Southeast Asian Studies. The awards are available for travel and related expenses for activities taking place between 1 July 2017 to 31 July 2018.\nPermissible activities include: \n\nfieldwork in SE Asia or key sites in the diaspora;\nresearch visits to important regional archives\, museums\, collections\, exhibitions or performances (concerning but not necessarily located in SE Asia);\na visit for collaborative writing or artistic practice with an academic or practitioner colleague from another institution in SE Asia;\ndelivery of a paper at a regional academic conference;\ndelivery of a paper to an academic or practitioner audience based on research previously conducted on/in the region.\n\nAwards available: \n\nThree Postgraduate Bursaries (PhD\, MPhil or MRes students)\, up to £1000 each\nOne Early Career Award\, up to £1500\nOne Senior Award\, up to £2500\n\nApplication deadline: 30 April 2017. SUMMARY:The NSC Field School
DESCRIPTION:\nOverview\n \n\nDuration: 22 Jul – 11 Aug 2018\n\nThe NSC Field School (organised by the Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre\, ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute) began in 2012 with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Singapore). The Field School aims to increase knowledge of the meaningful interactions between Asian countries\, with particular attention to intra-Asian engagement in the last two millennia\, and create a community of East Asia Summit (EAS) scholars. The Field School intentions will enhance practical skills; expand professional networks; and strengthen partnerships during the process of experiential learning. \n \nBetween 2012 and 2017 NSC Field Schools were conducted in Cambodia and Singapore\, and in 2018 the Field School is planned for July-August in East Java\, Indonesia\, and Singapore. SUMMARY:Panel Discussion on Migrant Labor in the Thai Fishing Industry at a Time of International Scrutiny
DESCRIPTION:The practices of Thailand’s fishing industry have been under scrutiny by the international community since media exposes in 2015 found use of trafficked fishermen were systematic and pervasive.  Under pressure of the European Union’s ‘yellow card’ listing of Thailand as a country violating EU requirements on fishing practices\, and the US government’s listing of Thailand as Tier 3\, the worst of the worst\, in the US annual Trafficking in Persons report\, the Thai government has implemented far reaching reforms in the fishing industry.  How far have these reforms gone\, and where are they still falling short? Has progress in ending “illegal\, unreported and unregulated” (IUU) fishing been matched by efforts to protect migrants\, primarily from Myanmar and Cambodia\, from exploitation and abuse? And what further steps if any will need to be taken? \nThese and other related questions will be addressed at SEA Junction on 31 March 2018 at 5-7 PM by a panel composed of: \n\nSompong Sakaew\, Director Labor Right Protection Network\nPhil Robertson\, Deputy Director Asia Division Human Rights Watch\nThird speaker being confirmed\n\nAt the event the recently HRW report on migrant labor in the Thai fishing sector will be discussed.
