DESCRIPTION:ASEASUK is offering bursaries to members to support research and impact activities in Southeast Asian Studies. The awards are available for travel and related expenses for activities taking place between 1 July 2017 to 31 July 2018.\nPermissible activities include: \n\nfieldwork in SE Asia or key sites in the diaspora;\nresearch visits to important regional archives\, museums\, collections\, exhibitions or performances (concerning but not necessarily located in SE Asia);\na visit for collaborative writing or artistic practice with an academic or practitioner colleague from another institution in SE Asia;\ndelivery of a paper at a regional academic conference;\ndelivery of a paper to an academic or practitioner audience based on research previously conducted on/in the region.\n\nAwards available: \n\nThree Postgraduate Bursaries (PhD\, MPhil or MRes students)\, up to £1000 each\nOne Early Career Award\, up to £1500\nOne Senior Award\, up to £2500\n\nApplication deadline: 30 April 2017. DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. SUMMARY:Cambodia-Thailand Migration Management: Failing Migrants?
DESCRIPTION:1.2 million Cambodians work overseas every year: over 90% in Thailand. Less than 30% of Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand migrated through official channels. \nThe Thai and the Cambodian government have attempted to regulate migration flows by introducing laws and measures. The policy frameworks\, consisting of bilateral agreements and registration rules\, are grounded in principles of labor demand and national security\, while also aspiring to promote safe migration and to prevent human trafficking. \nThe panel on 6 May at 5.30 PM at SEA Junction explores the challenges and opportunities in managing cross-border migration flows between Cambodia and Thailand by taking a closer look at existing policies and their implementation and assessing their effects on migrants. \nDiscussion will start with the presentation of Kyko Kusakabe from the Asian Institute of Technology of her study “Labor Migration and Human Trafficking: An Analysis of Laws\, Regulations and Policies in Thailand and Cambodia”.  The research findings will then be discussed by H.E Chou Bun Eng\, Secretary of State of Ministry of Interior of Cambodia and Permanent Vice Chairperson of National Committee for Counter Trafficking (NCCT) and representatives of civil society organizations working in Thailand and in Cambodia.
