DESCRIPTION:ASEASUK is offering bursaries to members to support research and impact activities in Southeast Asian Studies. The awards are available for travel and related expenses for activities taking place between 1 July 2017 to 31 July 2018.\nPermissible activities include: \n\nfieldwork in SE Asia or key sites in the diaspora;\nresearch visits to important regional archives\, museums\, collections\, exhibitions or performances (concerning but not necessarily located in SE Asia);\na visit for collaborative writing or artistic practice with an academic or practitioner colleague from another institution in SE Asia;\ndelivery of a paper at a regional academic conference;\ndelivery of a paper to an academic or practitioner audience based on research previously conducted on/in the region.\n\nAwards available: \n\nThree Postgraduate Bursaries (PhD\, MPhil or MRes students)\, up to £1000 each\nOne Early Career Award\, up to £1500\nOne Senior Award\, up to £2500\n\nApplication deadline: 30 April 2017. DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. DESCRIPTION:The model of economic growth applied in Southeast Asia has been centered on infrastructure expansion and maximization of natural resources. This in turn has implied –and condoned– the forced displacement and resettlement of (often minority or marginalized) local people who live in valuable lands or strategic places to satisfy development plans of local governments and state agencies and/or to serve the interests of private corporations. \nThis so-called development-induced displacement and resettlement (DIDR) is often presented as inevitable and the loss of home and livelihoods for the forced migrants has been dismissed as being ‘acceptable collateral damage’ or a ‘necessary evil’\, a price to be paid if countries are to develop. Historically associated with the construction of dams for hydroelectric power and irrigation\, DIDR increasingly occur for a wide range of projects from construction of railways and road developments and building of industrial complexes to urbanization\, commercial agriculture and conservation efforts. \nThe panel discussion to be held at SEA Junction on 19 June at 6 PM -7.30 PM will present experiences of DIDR and their impacts in selected Southeast Asian countries as well as thrash out ongoing initiatives to mitigate negative consequences of DIDR and their shortcomings.
