DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. Please circulate to all filmmakers in the region. Please help us reach out to young aspiring filmmakers in Southeast Asia! \nTHEME: Popular Culture and Southeast Asia \nSoutheast Asia: a region rich in popular cultural traditions. How do popular music\, art\, literature\, theatre\, comedy\, dance\, sport and film\, move people in Southeast Asia? What makes them laugh\, cry and feel? Inspire us! For 2018\, we open up the visual documentary project to documentaries that capture popular cultures across the region. \nREQUIREMENTS \n1. Applicants must be citizens from Southeast Asia or Japan.\n2. Documentaries should be no longer than 30 minutes.\n3. Applicants should make sure they have permission from any subjects that appear in the movies.\n4. Documentaries should include English subtitles.Translation and subtitling is also the responsibility of applicants. \n*Selected documentaries will be screened in their original languages with both Japanese and English subtitles. SUMMARY:Screening drama-documentary #BKKY
DESCRIPTION:On 18 August at 5PM\, SEA Junction will screen #BKKY\, a drama and documentary on Bangkok youth. The film is based on interviews of 100 Thai teenagers of diverse gender identity and sexual orientation\, who are transitioning from high school to university. In the interviews\, they frankly discuss about their experiences\, personal life\, and growing up in Bangkok. Topics include loss of virginity\, gender fluidity\, same-sex relationships\, parenting and hopes for the future.  \nFrom this rich and candid research material\, the director\, Nontawat Numbenchapol\, creates a fictional composite character of a 17-year-old high school student called Jojjo. In the 75-minutes film\, Jojo engages in a lesbian flirtation with fellow female student Q and soon complications and confusion set in. As reviewer Kuiper puts it “Much is written these days about the roles of gender identity and sexual orientation in contemporary youth rebellion. #BKKY makes a valuable contribution to the discussion\, with spirited testimonials from young people with no inhibitions about who they are and how they view the world around them.” (see further https://variety.com/2016/film/reviews/bkky-review-1201883595/) \nThe film premiered in October 2016 at the Busan International Film Festival before it received the Jury Award for best feature-length film from Lesbisch Schwule Filmtage Hamburg\, Germany. \nAlthough the film is not new\, SEA Junction interest is in discussing more #BKKY’s unique exploration of being young in Bangkok and the expressions of youth sexuality and gender fluidity in a Thai context. \nAfter the screening a Q &A session will be held with the director Nontawat Numbenchapol. \nDirector Profile \nNontawat Numbenchapol is a Thai film director and television screenwriter (born in Bangkok in 1983)\, who graduated from the Visual Communication Design Department\, Faculty of Art and Design\, Rangsit University.  He is recognized for his documentary work and has frequently collaborated with Cannes Palm d’Or winner Apichatpong Weerasethaku. Projects include “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Life” (stills photographer)\, “For Tomorrow\, for Tonight” (cinematographer)\, “Fireworks (Archives)” (project manager)\, and “Cemetery of Splendor” (documentary making-off).  \nIn 2013\, Numbenchapol finished his first documentary film “Boundary”\, funded by Busan International Film Festival and Art Network Asia\, for which he received the Young Filmmaker award from the Bangkok Critics Assembly. The film depicts point-of-views of local people at the Thai-Cambodia border.
