DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. DESCRIPTION:Deadline : August 31st\, 2018 \n\nGreetings Filmmakers and Friends! \nThe Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS)\, Kyoto University is calling for documentaries for the 7th Visual Documentary Project! Please circulate to all filmmakers in the region. Please help us reach out to young aspiring filmmakers in Southeast Asia! \nTHEME: Popular Culture and Southeast Asia \nSoutheast Asia: a region rich in popular cultural traditions. How do popular music\, art\, literature\, theatre\, comedy\, dance\, sport and film\, move people in Southeast Asia? What makes them laugh\, cry and feel? Inspire us! For 2018\, we open up the visual documentary project to documentaries that capture popular cultures across the region. \nREQUIREMENTS \n1. Applicants must be citizens from Southeast Asia or Japan.\n2. Documentaries should be no longer than 30 minutes.\n3. Applicants should make sure they have permission from any subjects that appear in the movies.\n4. Documentaries should include English subtitles.Translation and subtitling is also the responsibility of applicants. \n*Selected documentaries will be screened in their original languages with both Japanese and English subtitles. SUMMARY:Playing the Identity Card in Southeast Asia?
DESCRIPTION:Political contests in Southeast Asia as in the rest of the words have often been influenced by identity claims and featured arguments around ethnicity\, race or religion. Analysts and observers\, however\, have noted that in recent year identity politics have played a more significant role in maintaining political power and even more in the race for political office. Elections\, when held\, have exposed identity cleavages within plural societies and a tendency to articulate discourses around “indigenousness”\, “moral purity” or “homogeneity” at the cost of a constructed “other”. \nIn the panel\, held on 19 August at 5.00 PM at SEA Junction\, the speakers will reflect on the situation in their own country\, namely Malaysia\, Indonesia and Myanmar. As women intellectual and activists\, they will also elaborate on how these processes affect women political participation and role in society. More specifically the panel consists of: \nZainah Anwar is a prominent Malaysian non-governmental organization leader\, activist and Muslim feminist.[1] She was the head of Sisters in Islam for more than two decades before stepping down and now heads Musawah\, a global movement for equality and justice in the Muslim family. She also writes a monthly column on politics\, religion and women’s rights\, called Sharing the Nation\, in the Sunday Star\, Malaysia. She is a former member of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia. \nAlissa Qotrunnada Munawaroh Wahid\, a trained family psychologist\, is the founder and National Director of Gusdurian Network Indonesia (GNI)\, named after her late father\, President Abdurrahman Wahid who is also known as Gus Dur. She is also active in Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) as General Secretary of its Family Welfare Agency and is a Civil Society Ambassador for Sustainable Development Goals in Indonesia\, focusing on Goal 16: Peace\, Good Governance and Access to Justice. \nKhin Ohmar is an influential and award-winning democracy activist from Myanmar\, who has been working on the front lines of women’s empowerment and political reform since the 1988 student protests.
