DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. SUMMARY:Video Screening and Panel Discussion “Demanding Accountability in Asia”
DESCRIPTION:In Southeast Asia\, like in the rest of Asia\, impunity for past human rights violations is entrenched and regional human rights mechanisms remain weak. This has not discouraged\, however\, civil society groups to continue to act and to devise innovative and comprehensive approaches to truth and reparation at the grassroots as well as at higher administrative levels. On 11 September at 5PM\, the Transitional Justice Asia Networks (TJAN) in collaboration with SEA Junction will focus on the role of civil society in advocating and striving to achieve Transitional Justice (TJ) in the region. TJ is understood as the implementation of both judicial and non-judicial measures in order to redress legacies of human rights abuses\, including criminal prosecutions\, truth-seeking efforts\, reparation programs\, and various kinds of institutional reforms. \nAt the SEA Junction event\, selected videos of a new a series on transitional Justice in Asia will be screened (http://asia-ajar.org/video/) in combination with a panel discussion on the same issue. TJAN members will present initiatives in the region and discuss the challenges and achievements of transitional justice processes in Asia. For example\, how do we challenge the lack of accountability and authorities’ self-serving protective strategies under the umbrella of ‘Asian values’? What is required to ensure that transitional justice processes deliver a long-lasting impact?
