DESCRIPTION:OVERVIEW \nProfessional Development Grants (PDGs) provide support for mid-career conservationists to pursue short-term\, non-degree training to upgrade their knowledge and skills. These trainings can include short courses\, certificate trainings\, or conferences among other training opportunities. \nPDGs support training-related costs\, including registration fees and tuition\, meals and accommodations\, books and materials\, international travel\, visa fees\, and local transportation. DESCRIPTION:About \nRecent development which occurred during the last two decades in the Asia Pacific region\, there were some meticulous challenges towards the existing progressive peace where it is achievable only by having consistent assessment and efforts to prevent conflict. Culture of Peace as conceptually consists of “Values\, attitudes and behaviors that reject violence and prevent conflict by tackling their root causes to solve problems through dialogue and negotiation among individuals\, groups and nations” must be endorsed in everyday to achieve peace. SUMMARY:Rice Before Rights: Challenges of Advancing Human Rights in Asia
DESCRIPTION:Asia Centre’s International Faculty Club (IFC) will convene on United Nations (UN) Day 2018. While celebrating the UN and its many achievements in the area of human rights\, the IFC will also hold an informal intellectual exchange on the challenges of defending and advancing human rights in the current geopolitical environment in Asia. In today’s global order\, China is pursuing its own agenda on human rights – ‘rice before rights’ – that challenges the universality and indivisibility of international human rights\, Southeast Asian states appear to be rolling back liberal democratic progress to date and the United States and Europe are bogged down in their respective internal populist politics. The UN’s ability to advance human rights\, a key pillar of its work (along with peace and security and development)\, is seriously affected by its recently adopted reform agenda that seems not to place human rights in a central role and is virtually crippled by great power gridlock. Can traditional ‘middle powers’\, such as Australia\, Canada and the Nordic countries\, find innovative pathways to keep rights alive? Are emerging powers capable and willing to pick up the human rights mantle? Can civil society adapt and find innovative ways of engaging with human rights work as donor funds decline? What role can higher education institutions and think tanks play in promoting and protecting rights as freedom of expression declines across the world? What is the role of business organizations? The IFC’s informal intellectual exchange will feature expert commentators from academia\, civil society\, international organizations\, the and the public sector to dissect these critical issues on UN Day. \nVenue: Asia Centre\, Phayathai Plaza \nTime: 6 to 8 pm \nAdmission: Entry by donation (suggested amount 150 baht) \nAbout the IFC \nThe IFC\, launched in 2017\, brings together academics\, researchers and graduate students living\, researching\, studying\, working\, or passing through Bangkok\, Thailand. The Club brings scholars from all disciplines together in order to share their research interests\, explore avenues for partnering on projects\, facilitate fieldwork\, circulate information on jobs\, grants and scholarship opportunities\, share conference and publication calls\, introduce promising faculty and graduate students\, exchange views on challenges to higher education\, and other relevant topics of interest. The IFC meets quarterly and has no formal agenda. Scholars may wish to request short presentations (10-15 minutes max) on their current research or projects. SUMMARY:Screening Documentary “The Staging Post”
DESCRIPTION:On 24 October at 6.30PM\, SEA Junction will screen THE STAGING POST\, a real-time\, real-life multi-platform documentary released in June 2017. Filmed by 17 year-old refugee Khadim Dai and directed and produced by Australian filmmaker Jolyon Hoff\, the film follows Afghan Hazara refugees\, Muzafar\, Khadim and Tahira. Stranded in Indonesia after Australia ‘stopped the boats’ and facing many years in limbo\, they built a community and started the Cisarua Refugee Learning Centre. This refugee-run school has been operating over four year now and teaches up to 200 students each week. The initiative inspired other refugees in Indonesia to follow\, leading to what has been called “a refugee-lead education revolution”. Today\, in Indonesia\, there are more than 14 schools and 1500 refugees receiving education from around 100 volunteer refugee teachers. \nAfter the screening of the 65 minutes-documentary\, a Q & A session will be held with Muzafar Ali\, one of the main protagonist\, and Jolyon Hoff\, the director. If feasible\, a skype connection will also be held with the Cisarua school and the pupils. \nBrief Profile of the Protagonist and Speaker \nMuzafar Ali is a former refugee from Afghanistan. He is living with his family in Adelaide\, Australia\, where he is a student at the University of South Australia and the Project Director at Cisarua Learning Ltd. Muzafar worked for the United Nations in Afghanistan supporting the disbandment of illegal armed groups and promoting human rights. His work took him to remote areas of Afghanistan where he was overwhelmed by the beauty of the country and the people he encountered. He began to photograph them and became a well-known photographer. His photos have been exhibited in Afghanistan\, South Korea\, USA\, Canada\, Holland and Australia. Later he was forced to leave Afghanistan and made his way to Indonesia\, where he co-founded the first refugee-managed school in Indonesia\, the Cisarua Refugee Learning Centre. Muzafar is passionate refugee advocate who regularly speaks for and to refugees in Australia and internationally. His life as a refugee in Indonesia is featured in the documentary\, The Staging Post. \nBrief Profile of the Director and Speaker \nJolyon Hoff is an Australian filmmaker fascinated by sub-cultures\, identity and community bonding. He has made films on subjects as varied as a schizophrenic Australian surfing icon; an eccentric football fan whose fame surpassed that of his team; American computer programmers creating virtual reality gaming worlds; tsunami survivors in Aceh\, Indonesia; and traditional Kings\, Chiefs and Yoruba rituals in Nigeria.
