DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. DESCRIPTION:OVERVIEW \nProfessional Development Grants (PDGs) provide support for mid-career conservationists to pursue short-term\, non-degree training to upgrade their knowledge and skills. These trainings can include short courses\, certificate trainings\, or conferences among other training opportunities. \nPDGs support training-related costs\, including registration fees and tuition\, meals and accommodations\, books and materials\, international travel\, visa fees\, and local transportation. DESCRIPTION:About \nRecent development which occurred during the last two decades in the Asia Pacific region\, there were some meticulous challenges towards the existing progressive peace where it is achievable only by having consistent assessment and efforts to prevent conflict. Culture of Peace as conceptually consists of “Values\, attitudes and behaviors that reject violence and prevent conflict by tackling their root causes to solve problems through dialogue and negotiation among individuals\, groups and nations” must be endorsed in everyday to achieve peace. SUMMARY:Public Lecture “The New Soundscape of Southeast Asia” by Lawan Jirasuradej
DESCRIPTION:Writer and film maker Lawan Jirasuradej will give a public lecture at SEA Junction on 27 October 2018 at 5PM focusing on contemporary sounds of traditional music in Southeast Asia. Her talk is based on her research and writing for the recently published book New Voices in Southeast Asia (2018\, Sugree Charoensook\, ed.). The book\, in Thai\, explores music scenes in Thailand and neighboring countries\, namely Cambodia\, Laos\, Malaysia\, Myanmar and Vietnam\, as a preparatory step leading to the establishment of the Southeast Asia Music Museum by Mahidol University College of Music in Thailand. It describes the lives and works of top musicians embracing traditional (classical and folk) music in their work. \nThey include in her lecture\, Lawan Jirasuradej\, will use photos and short video fragments to present how these digital age musicians\, including soloists\, singers\, ensembles or bands\, composers\, conductors\, mix media artists\, DJs\, musicologists\, sound engineers\, and also social activists\, are reinventing music with their age-old instruments\, some of which are fast disappearing\, and offering us a new soundscape that often blur the boundaries of genre. She will discuss how they find themselves connecting to musicians in different cultures of the world much more\, and in doing so they discover the unique sound of their own traditional music. For instance\, Thxa Soe\, the Burmese hip-hop artist mixes Saing Waing ensemble (traditional orchestra) to create dance-beat mega hits. In Cambodia\, traditional instruments were developed to accommodate chromatic scales and played along with Western classical orchestras\, while also working to find their original pitches and scales. These current sound makers in Southeast Asia address the past to serve the present in order to not only preserve but also to inspire new creations for the future. \nSpeaker Profile \nLawan Jirasuradej is an award-winning film-maker and recipient of Fulbright scholarship\, artist residency and film grants.
