William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. SUMMARY:Asian Graduate Student Fellowships 2019 (6 weeks In-residence)
DESCRIPTION:The Asia Research Institute (ARI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications from citizens of Asian countries currently enrolled in a fulltime Master’s or PhD degree at a university in an Asian country (except Singapore) for consideration for the award of Asian Graduate Student Fellowships. Offered to graduate students working in the Humanities and Social Sciences on Southeast Asian topics\, the fellowship will allow the recipients to be based at NUS for an ‘in residence fellowship’ for a period of six (6) weeks. The aim of the fellowship is to enable scholars to make full use of the wide range of resources held in the libraries of NUS and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. \nINTENSIVE ENGLISH ACADEMIC WRITING COURSE \nA limited number of students may be selected to take part in a two-week long intensive course on English academic writing. This program is specifically intended for students who struggle with writing and/or communicating in academic English. You are asked to indicate in your application if you see a need for participating in this course. If you have already received training in this field or if you are a (near) native speaker you might not benefit from this course. Please note that those students who enroll in the English academic writing program will thus have two weeks less time to conduct research locally. Please consider carefully what is more important to you at this stage of your career. \nREQUIREMENTS & EXPECTATIONS \nThe fellowship will commence on 17 June 2019\, and scholars are expected to finish a paper of 8\,000 words and make a presentation on their work at the “Singapore Graduate Forum on Southeast Asian Studies” to be organized from 22 to 26 July 2019. You are requested to have a draft of your paper and to submit it not later than two weeks before commencing the fellowship program (04 June 2019). This paper will be shared with your local mentor in preparation for your interactions with her/him. \nSuccessful candidates can expect the following benefits:  \n\nA one-time allowance of SGD500.00\nA one-time round trip travel subsidy by the most economical and direct route (via budget airline if available) on a reimbursement basis upon being accepted for the fellowship.\nAccess to library and computer resources on campus. You can look forward to excellent library and internet computer facilities at NUS’ main library (http://www.lib.nus.edu.sg/)\, the library at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) (https://www.iseas.edu.sg/library) and the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library at the National Library (http://www.nlb.gov.sg) to facilitate your research for the dissertation. SUMMARY:Earth Rights Defenders in Southeast Asia- Tackling the Challenges? Panel Discussion and Report Launch
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is a global concern. Yet\, in Southeast Asia as in the rest of the world\, the environment is increasingly exploited in an unsustainable manner in pursuit of consumption and production targets and economic growth. A greedy quest for land and dwindling natural resources by powerful economic and political entities is ongoing in many extractive and land-intensive sectors\, facilitated by weak regulations and law enforcement. \nThe activists standing up in defense of affected communities\, the environment and human rights – earth rights defenders – are increasingly at risk. They face administrative and legal challenges through the (mis)use of restrictive laws\, as well as online and offline surveillance. They are threatened\, physically attacked\, and even killed\, in most cases with impunity. \nOn 13 December 2018 at 6.30 PM at SEA Junction\, EarthRights International (ERI) will launch a report on this global concern and commemorate the 20th anniversary of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.  The report titled “Fighting Back: A Global Protection Strategy for Earth Rights Defenders” analyzes the root causes of the issue and outlines the components of an effective global regime for the protection of activists working to defend the rights of local communities to land and water and control of their traditional territories. \nThe event will include a panel discussion featuring earth rights defenders from three countries in the region – Thailand\, Myanmar and Cambodia – who will discuss the challenges they have faced and overcome in their fight for environmental justice\, as well as the kinds of support they need from key stakeholders such as civil society\, the UN and foreign diplomatic missions.
