Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. DESCRIPTION:Registration: 31 January 2019 \n  \nGreat Powers and Grand Strategies in the Asia Pacific\, 1900-1954 \nDept. of History\, National University of Singapore \nDecember 2019                                                                            \nThe first half of the 20th Century represented both the pinnacle and nadir of Great Power involvement in reordering the Asia Pacific\, a region defined here as ranging from Burma to Vladivostok. From the multilateral military intervention to quell the so-called Boxer Rebellion through the Geneva Conference of mid-1954\, the Great Powers sought to impose political order on an Asia Pacific they saw as chaotic and conflict-prone. But implicit within this attempt at reordering were the relationships amongst and between Great Powers themselves. This period in international history was ultimately defined by the combination of Chinese weakness and instability and Great Power attempts to ‘manage’ that situation. From that starting point\, this conference aims to evaluate grand strategies pursued by Great Powers—including the British Empire\, France\, the United States of America\, Russia/Soviet Union\, and especially China and Japan—to try to manage not only the region but also each other\, and to consider the impact this all had on regional and global states systems and order. SUMMARY:Call for Applications: Graduate Student Workshop for Southeast Asian Studies
DESCRIPTION:Registration: January 30\, 2019 \nThis two-day dissertation writing workshop for UC students will be held Friday-Saturday\, May 3-4\, 2019 at UC Berkeley. The deadline to submit applications is January 30\, 2019. \nThe Center for Southeast Asian Studies at UCLA and the Center for Southeast Asia Studies at UC Berkeley are accepting applications for participation in a two-day writing workshop for Ph.D. candidates currently enrolled at any University of California campus whose research in the humanities and social sciences focuses on Southeast Asia. \nThe workshop is intended for advanced students who are currently engaged in writing a dissertation or earlier stage students who are developing dissertation proposals or conducting research. The purpose of the workshop is for the participants selected to have an opportunity to present their work and secure feedback from faculty and fellow students\, with an emphasis to be placed on the theoretical and/or conceptual foundations of the material presented as well as on research methods and writing approaches. \nUC Berkeley CSEAS and UCLA CSEAS will cover RT airfare\, ground transportation and lodging for three nights in Berkeley for participants from southern California. Participants from northern California will receive mileage reimbursement and two nights’ lodging in Berkeley. Some meals will also be provided. \nThe workshop will be held at the Institute of East Asian Studies in downtown Berkeley\, and is supported by the UC Berkeley-UCLA consortium grant as a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center for Southeast Asia. \nApplicants should be Ph.D. candidates currently writing their dissertation proposal\, or Ph.D. candidates currently conducting their research\, or Ph.D. candidates at the early stages of writing their dissertation. \nRequired Application Materials: \n\nApplicant’s name\, department\, UC campus\, email address\, dissertation title\, and dissertation chair;\nA one page proposal\, single spaced\, that clearly addresses the state/stage of the dissertation;\nA one-page letter of support from one’s dissertation chair (can be submitted separately)\n\nApplication materials are due on January 30\, 2019 – sent by email to cseas@berkeley.edu.
