DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. Community organizing for empowerment is a fine art with people participation as a core value. Although it takes time and the process is complicated\, it warrants serious attention from community change leaders as the outcome is more likely to sustain. Participants will visit some success stories of communities that have gone through this process and learn about how they moved from community organising around single issues\, to a social movement for structural change. SUMMARY:Class on Health Equity in Southeast Asia for Students of University of Muhammadiyah\, Jakarta
DESCRIPTION:International Field Study (IFS) 2019 is a one-month learning program for students of the Faculty of Public Health\, University of Muhammadiyah\, Jakarta in Bangkok\, Thailand. This program aims to provide to the students experience in another country to compare and understand the importance of contextualizing health problems and approaches to resolve them. At the same time\, it provides opportunities for interaction and networking with the wider and diverse community. \nStudents will learn from Faculty of Public Health Mahidol University\, College of Public Health Sciences Chulalongkorn University\, Sekolah Indonesia di Bangkok as well as SEA Junction. At SEA Junction\, IPSR Associate Professor and SEA Junction Director Rosalia Sciortino will give two classes on 8 February on “The Dynamics of International Labour Migration in ASEAN with a special focus on health and gender\, and on the “Challenges and Opportunities in Realizing Health Equity in Southeast Asia”. \nStudents will also have volunteering activities at SEA Junction\, helping with the events and other tasks. \nLecturer \nDr. Rosalia (Lia) Sciortino Sumaryono\, a cultural anthropologist and development sociologist by training\, earned her doctorate at the Vrije Universities\, Amsterdam with honors. Currently\, she is Associate Professor at the Institute for Population and Social Research\, Mahidol University and Visiting Professor at the Master in International Development Studies (MAIDS)\, Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. She is also the Founder and Director of SEA Junction\, a public venue for interaction and cross-learning on Southeast Asia art\, cultures and societies (www.seajunction.org) Most recently\, Dr. Sciortino was IDRC Regional Director for Southeast and East Asia in Singapore (2010-2014)\, Senior Adviser for the Health Program to the Australian Agency for International Development in Indonesia (2009-2010)\, and Regional Director for Asia of the Rockefeller Foundation (2000-2007) establishing during her tenure the Foundations Southeast Asia Office in Bangkok. Prior to that\, she was program officer Gender\, Human Development and Reproductive Health at the Indonesia and Philippines offices of the Ford Foundation from 1993 to 2000. Dr. Sciortino acts as a consultant for international and regional organizations\, as an adviser for academic and international development institutions\, and is a member of scientific and institutional boards. She has published widely on development issues in Southeast Asia\, in particular public health\, gender and regional integration in the Greater Mekong Sub-region and ASEAN. A Dutch national native of Palermo\, Italy\, she fluently speaks Italian\, English\, Indonesian and Dutch.
