Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. DESCRIPTION:Registration: 28 February 2019 \nIntroduction \nThe Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) is offering 5 American\, 5 Cambodian and 5 French undergraduate students and recent graduates an exciting opportunity to join a 6 week (July 1 st-August 9 th \, 2019) Junior Resident Fellows Program in Cambodia. The program provides a unique experience\, allowing students to live and study alongside others from different backgrounds and cultures\, while learning about the history and society of today’s Cambodia. During their residency\, students will be based at the CKS campus in Siem Reap\, which is situated in the beautiful grounds of Wat Damnak\, one of the town’s major Buddhist pagodas\, only minutes away from the famous Angkor\, World Heritage Site with its enigmatic temples. Fellows will also spend time in Cambodia’s capital city\, Phnom Penh. \nWho is eligible for this program?  \n\nCitizens of one of the above 3 nationalities\nUndergraduates or recent Baccalaureate degree (from Year 2 of Bac)\nGood level of English in reading\, speaking and writing\n\nWhat to Expect? \nCKS has been running the Junior Resident Fellows Program in Cambodia since 2004 to enthusiastic reviews. The program is intended for individuals who have a genuine interest in Cambodia and Southeast Asia\, who may be considering graduate studies or careers involving the region. With this in mind\, the focus is on striking a balance between academic rigor and extra-curricular activities\, including field visits designed to give students a better understanding of contemporary Cambodia. Cambodian history and culture cannot be fully understood without considering the influence of powerful regional neighbors such as Thailand\, Vietnam and China or international powers\, like France\, the United States\, and more recently the United Nations. The program will\, therefore\, also focus on Cambodia’s past and present relationships with its neighbors and its place within the region. \nHow is the Program Structured? \nThe program is led by a qualified instructor who has extensive teaching and research experience in Cambodian and Southeast Asian Studies. It is structured around interactive classroom sessions from Monday-Friday (2 hours daily). The course begins by briefly covering Cambodia’s ancient past\, before examining major social\, political\, economic and cultural change since the country gained independence from France in the early 1950s. Particular attention is given to how Cambodia has come to terms with the horrors of its more recent post-Khmer Rouge past\, and the ways it is re-engaging with regional and international communities. Outside the classroom\, fellows participate in field trips\, including visits to historical and cultural sites\, and interact with organizations in and around Siem Reap working in development\, education\, democracy promotion\, human rights and journalism. \nLanguage: The language of instruction is English. All fellows are expected to have sufficient\nEnglish language skills to be able to participate in classroom discussions. The American and French fellows will receive daily instruction in the Khmer Language\, and the Cambodian fellows will attend English- language reading\, writing and speaking skills seminars. \nCost:  CKS covers the costs of tuition\, accommodations (bed and breakfast)\, local\ntransportation while taking part in program activities\, books and study materials\, and some field trip expenses such as entrance fees to historical and cultural sites. CKS also has small program grants\, of between $600 – $800\, to help with international air fares\, visas\, and medical insurance. All other living and personal expenses will be incurred by the individual fellows. \nProgram Requirements:  \nFellows are required to attend all classes\, all field trips\, and to participate in classroom\ndiscussions. They will also work on a short paper (10-15 pages) on a related topic of their\nchoice\, which they will present at the end of the program (10-15 minutes). SUMMARY:Southeast Asia - Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships
DESCRIPTION:Registration: February 22\, 2019 \nFLAS fellowships are designed to support graduate and undergraduate students who are studying Southeast Asian languages and area studies courses at Intermediate level or higher. Languages for academic year fellowships are Filipino\, Indonesian\, Khmer\, Thai or Vietnamese. In summer\, additional SEA languages are eligible. \nThe U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship program supports training in modern foreign languages and related area studies.  New and continuing graduate students in all disciplines may apply for academic year and summer awards for Intermediate or Advanced levels of language study.  Beginning level of a language may be undertaken by graduate students if the student already is at advanced level in a second Southeast Asian language.  Undergraduates already enrolled at UCLA who will be in student status for the duration of the fellowship\, may also apply for both awards but only for Intermediate and Advanced levels of language study.  Currently approved SEA languages for FLAS study are Indonesian\, Filipino/Tagalog\, Khmer\, Thai and Vietnamese. (Intermediate Khmer is not taught at UCLA but can be available via distance learning from UC Berkeley during the academic year.)  Students must also agree to submit quarterly reports on their progress\, submit before and after language assessments to the U.S. Department of Education\, take a before and after oral proficiency examination with a designated instructor\, and report to the U.S. Department of Education every two years for eight years after graduation on the recipient’s occupation and the extent to which the FLAS language is being used. \nSelection for the award is based on the following criteria: \n\nApplicants must be U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents.\nAcademic performance and potential as evidenced by academic transcript\, letters of recommendation\, and statement of purpose.\nThe extent to which overall course of study focuses on Southeast Asia.\nThe level of planned language study. More advanced levels are preferred.\nPast awardees may reapply.\n\nThese grants may be combined with supplementary funding from UCLA and/or other funding agencies. However in cases of parallel large grants\, recipients will have to decide which grant to accept and pairing will not be allowed. Grantees are required to inform the Center of any awards received during the FLAS fellowship period.  \nSummer 2019 fellowships are for intensive language programs only. They provide a stipend of $2\,500 plus tuition and fees to a maximum of $5\,000\, and (optional) up to $1\,000 for travel. FLAS funds may be used for intensive summer language study at UCLA or elsewhere. A letter grade is also required. Non-language programs are not eligible for summer FLAS funding\, nor is dissertation research. In order to qualify for funding\, the summer intensive language program must last at least 6 weeks and provide at least 140 contact hours for beginning and intermediate level courses\, or 120 contact hours for advanced level coursework. \nUCLA students who wish to attend the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) should simultaneously apply for admission as well as for other funding directly to SEASSI http://seassi.wisc.edu/and for FLAS funding through the UCLA Summer 2019 FLAS application. Qualified applicants should apply for all possible scholarships to maximize opportunities. \nAcademic year 2019-2020 fellowships (contingent upon the availability of funding) are awarded for nine months and provide a total stipend of $15\,000 for graduate students and $5\,000 for undergraduates.  Academic Year tuition and fees are paid up to $18\,000 for graduate students and $10\,000 for undergraduates.  The Academic Year fellowship requires that students take one Southeast Asia language and one area studies course for a letter grade each quarter for the entire year if in residence at UCLA.  Independent Studies are allowed with specific permission. It is expected that AY fellowships will be used at UCLA unless specific approval is given.  AY awards may be used for dissertation research for students at the advanced level of language proficiency\, but this must be approved in advance. \nSince the purpose of the FLAS program is to enrich the nation’s pool of area and international specialists\, applicants must be planning to use their training to teach\, to serve in government or international agencies\, or to engage in other work that advances American understanding of other countries.
