DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. SUMMARY:Lecture on Informal Architecture in South East Asian Cities by Paco Garcia (Closed Event)
DESCRIPTION:Urban centers in developing countries are generally covered by an amalgamation of informal structures and building extensions. \nWhat are the legal implications of such structures? What standards should architects and planners adopt in regard to issues such as fire safety\, heritage preservation and aesthetic value? Do their design priorities respond to subsistence needs or are they driven by cultural factors or dictated by specific standards? Does informal architecture signal the failure of commercial developers to deliver context-responsive habitats?       \nThese questions will be the focus of a presentation on 26 April at 5 PM organized by the Bangkok Social Research Network. The speaker\, Paco Garcia\, has researched for the past two and a half years the emergence of informal architecture in a number of cities in South East Asia with the aim of building a regional-wide understanding of the forces behind these construction practices. \nBio speaker: \nPaco Garcia Moro was born in Spain and is an US accredited architect. He was awarded the David Del Val Foundation Grant in 2008\, the EMECW scholarship by the European Commission in 2010 and the Design Trust Hong Kong Seed Grant in 2018. Paco has been a lecturer at the universities of Chulalongkorn and Thammasat in Bangkok\, where he has been living for the past 5 years. His is now pursuing his doctoral degree at the Technical University of Valencia. \nThis event is only open to the members of the Bangkok Social Research Club and space is limited to a maximum of 15 persons.
