DESCRIPTION:The call for proposals will be open from 2 May to 17 July 2019. \nThe essential content for the IUCN World Conservation Congress is provided by quality proposals\, submitted on a competitive basis. \nIf your proposal is selected\, in your session\, you will have an opportunity to engage a targeted and influential audience of leaders and decision makers from government\, civil society\, business\, and academia as well as conservation and sustainable development professionals from around the world. Hosting a session is not only an opportunity to showcase your organisation and its activities\, but also a chance for you to receive feedback from key stakeholders\, generate new partnerships and inform action on a global scale. \nThere are a number of different types of sessions you can consider hosting\, from formal thematic stream sessions\, focussed on developing ideas from the thematic plenaries\, to  training and capacity building sessions\, “a Campus”\, or a “Speaker Pitch” during which you can showcase your conservation work and your organisation’s achievements\, to a broad audience. \nThe session types listed below are open for proposals. Descriptions of each session type can be found on the dedicated page. \n\nThematic Stream Sessions\nSpeaker Pitches\nCampus Sessions\n\nTo be selected for inclusion in the final Congress programme\, event proposals must meet a series of criteria. \nFor example\, in addition to the overall merit of the proposal\, session proposals will be evaluated based on their alignment with the draft IUCN Programme 2021-2024\, their gender responsiveness\, their degree of youth engagement\, their intended engagement with the audience\, and other factors.Please refer to the Outline of the Call for Proposals for the full list of criteria\, and detailed guidelines on how to submit a successful proposal.  \nRemember that successful events are those that involve participants\, and provide ample space for discussion and the exchange of ideas. SUMMARY:Call for collaboration: SUMERNET 4 All research grants for policy and practice in the Mekong Region
DESCRIPTION:SUMERNET 4 All\, the Mekong programme of SEI Asia\, invites concept notes for research and policy engagement on water insecurity in the Mekong Region. The call is open now. \nGrants for collaborative research for policy and practice for Mekong Region researchers \nThe Sustainable Mekong Research Network (SUMERNET) announces a call for concept notes for its research grants for 2019. This phase of the programme (2019-2028) is titled SUMERNET 4 All\,  focusing on water insecurity in the Mekong Region. The total fund available in this round is 12\,000\,000 SEK for 12 research projects with the budget not more than 1\,000\,000 SEK per project (approximately US$ 107\,000 per project). \nSubmission deadline: 15th May 2019\, 23:59 (Bangkok local time) \nBe part of research for policy and practice that makes a difference to all \nSUMERNET 4 All is a knowledge-based policy research programme. The programme wants to support research projects that focus on reducing water insecurity for all in particular for the poor\, marginalized and socially vulnerable groups of women and men in the Mekong Region. Within this focus are three themes: \n\nwater access\, rights and allocation in times of water insecurity;\ngovernance and management of water-related disaster risks;\ntransboundary interactions with water systems.\n\nSUMERNET provides financial support and technical assistance to consortia of researchers and practitioners from the Mekong Region together with the possible involvement of other Southeast Asian country partners. Consortia will carry out policy-relevant research over 2.0-2.5 years (24-30 months) in one of the above research themes. \nSUMERNET will fund collaborative research and other innovative approaches that directly address policy settings and issues to meet programme goals. SUMERNET 4 All has a mission to “improve the policies and practices in reducing water insecurity by conducting collaborative research\, engaging in the policy process\, and promoting scientifically sound research and innovation while considering gender and social equality\, human rights\, conflict sensitivity\, environmental integrity and poverty reduction in the Mekong Region.” \nResearch granting process \nThe concept notes will be reviewed by SUMERNET advisors\, SUMERNET Secretariat and other regional experts and approved by the SUMERNET Steering Committee. \nThose consortia (about 12 teams) whose concept notes have been shortlisted will be invited to submit draft full proposals. SUMMARY:Panel Discussion “Fundraising for Civil Society in Southeast Asia”
DESCRIPTION:While there is much talk of the shrinking of civic space in Southeast Asia (and the world)\, public discussion rarely touches on how this also affects (and is affected by) the availability of funding for civil society organizations\, in particular those that advocate for human rights. Last February\, SEA Junction has launched a series of events and publications focusing on the funding challenges experienced by civil society in the region\, with support by the Open Society Foundations (OSF).  This initiative named “Wielding the funding strings of civil society in Southeast Asia” is born out of an article with the same title recently written by SEA Junction’s director for New Mandala (https://www.newmandala.org/weilding-purse-strings/). As the article notes: \n“Across Southeast Asia\, governments’ stiffened oversight is limiting access to international and national funds by CSOs\, in particular when directed at financing advocacy and rights-based activities. This occurs amidst an evolving development aid landscape wherein established donor agencies reposition themselves in line with more conservative contexts back home and abroad\, and where a new set of funders does not necessarily appreciate the merit of a “vibrant civil society” for democracy and development” (Sciortino 2018). \nIn the first event of the series\, we had an introduction of the issues at stake from the perspective of NGO activists about the challenges they encounter in finding funding for their organizations and what could be alternative ways of finding much needed resources. In this second event on 14 May at 6PM at SEA Junction\, we will focus on the same issues\, but as experienced by fund raisers\, those who try to help raising funds for civil society through various means\, as resource mobilization officers\, consultants or representatives of intermediary organizations. The panel speakers are: \nSanjay Gathia   \nIndependent Consultant –  Institutional & Program Management and Fundraising \nNova Fransisca Silitonga \nProgram Manager\, Tifa Foundation \nEmily Perkin \nManaging Director\, Just Cause Asia \nSpeakers profiles  \nSanjay Gathia \nSanjay is a social justice and advocacy and development practitioner with more than 15 years of experience\, and has worked with and engaged NGOs\, government institutions\, regional bodies\, corporate firms and media in the Asia Pacific region. He specializes in capacity building\, program management and fundraising. His thematic interests are wide ranging from democratic processes to refugees and migrants\, humanitarian responses and media engagement. He completed his PG Diploma in Human Resource Management & Information Technology from Amity University\, India and M.A. in International Human Rights from Mahidol University\, Thailand. \nNova Fransisca Silitonga \nNova is Program Manager and Acting Director for Tifa Foundation and is responsible for managing programs and staff as well as mobilizing resources. Previously she initiated the implementation of Child’s Rights and Business Principles with UNICEF Indonesia and mobilized resources to support its programs. Nova served in the ASEAN Secretariat; and has had more than 5 years of experiences in managing G-to-G cooperation programs. She holds  a postgraduate degree in International Business Administration from University of Indonesia.  Thanks to an Erasmus Mundus’ Masters scholarship she earned a Master from the University of Trento\, Italy and from Regensburg University in Germany with cum laude\, majoring in Comparative Local Development study. \nEmily Perkin \nEmily has around 15 years of experience in the social sector as a consultant\, staff member\, trustee and volunteer. She has been based in Singapore since February 2013 and since then has worked with many charities\, social enterprises and donors across the region to provide philanthropy advice and impact assessments. Her experience includes conducting large-scale value for money assessments for central government; managing a knowledge network for charities in Japan and Afghanistan; and co-founding an award-winning social enterprise in London.
