DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. SUMMARY:IUCN World Conservation Congress
DESCRIPTION:The call for proposals will be open from 2 May to 17 July 2019. \nThe essential content for the IUCN World Conservation Congress is provided by quality proposals\, submitted on a competitive basis. \nIf your proposal is selected\, in your session\, you will have an opportunity to engage a targeted and influential audience of leaders and decision makers from government\, civil society\, business\, and academia as well as conservation and sustainable development professionals from around the world. Hosting a session is not only an opportunity to showcase your organisation and its activities\, but also a chance for you to receive feedback from key stakeholders\, generate new partnerships and inform action on a global scale. \nThere are a number of different types of sessions you can consider hosting\, from formal thematic stream sessions\, focussed on developing ideas from the thematic plenaries\, to  training and capacity building sessions\, “a Campus”\, or a “Speaker Pitch” during which you can showcase your conservation work and your organisation’s achievements\, to a broad audience. \nThe session types listed below are open for proposals. Descriptions of each session type can be found on the dedicated page. \n\nThematic Stream Sessions\nSpeaker Pitches\nCampus Sessions\n\nTo be selected for inclusion in the final Congress programme\, event proposals must meet a series of criteria. \nFor example\, in addition to the overall merit of the proposal\, session proposals will be evaluated based on their alignment with the draft IUCN Programme 2021-2024\, their gender responsiveness\, their degree of youth engagement\, their intended engagement with the audience\, and other factors.Please refer to the Outline of the Call for Proposals for the full list of criteria\, and detailed guidelines on how to submit a successful proposal.  \nRemember that successful events are those that involve participants\, and provide ample space for discussion and the exchange of ideas. The variety of event types is intended to allow for a broad range of approaches and fora for learning and knowledge exchange. Please avoid proposing sessions featuring a series of speakers making presentations with slides! \nPlease note: The selection of proposals is a highly competitive process. SUMMARY:Thailand Premiere Screening of “Capital of Mae La” and Discussion with the Producers Belle Phromchanya and Jiraporn Laocharoenwong
DESCRIPTION:The short ethnographic documentary that will be premiered at SEA Junction on 18 May at 5PM tells the story of Mae La\, a refugee settlement on the Thailand-Myanmar border\, through personal conversations with its inhabitants. Mae La has been a home for over 40\,000 refugees for more than 30 years. Lives supposedly ‘in-between’ have become permanent while the camp has acquired features of a city: dynamic\, vibrant\, with more facilities and more mobility for refugees than one would expect. This project is a semi-longitudinal work over a 4-year timespan\, produced in an artistic and ethnographic context. It started with personal curiosity and later developed into a tribute to the fascinating individuals of Mae La who shared their stories with the makers. The short film presents a personal reflection on the lives of refugees in long-term camps\, for whom the camp has become their home and raises questions about issues of citizenship\, statelessness\, nationality and permanent residency. \nProduced by Belle Phromchanya (designer/filmmaker) and Jiraporn Laocharoenwong (anthropologist)\, the documentary has recently been screened at cultural center Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam in April\, 2019. At the Thailand Premiere at SEA Junction after the screening\, there will be an informal Q & A discussion with both makers and Matcha Phorn-in\, a human and gender rights activist who works on issues of statelessness with refugees and other marginalized communities. \nThis event is part of one of our core thematic series “Displaced and Uprooted in Southeast Asia” in collaboration with TIFA Foundation. The series aims to give visibility to the fate of displaced persons\, asylum seekers and refugees in the region and stimulate public discussion on inclusive policy and intervention responses to forced movements of people. \nAbout the presenters \nBelle Phromchanya was born in Thailand and relocated to Amsterdam in 2011. After graduating from the MA Design at the Sandberg instituut\, she began her career as an independent designer and filmmaker under the moniker: Non Native Native (www.nonnativenative.com). In recent years she has produced a series of artistic investigations on the subject of cultural identity and contemporary migration. Her works are made up of visual research\, documentary film\, as well as multimedia installations\, displaying personal explorations of political and social realities. \nJiraporn Laocharoenwong is a lecturer at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology\, Faculty of Political Science\, Chulalongkorn University\, Bangkok. She obtained Master of Science in Sociology (Contemporary Social Thought)\, London School of Economics (LSE)\, and Master of Arts in Development Studies\, International Institute of Social Studies (ISS)\, Erasmus University. Currently\, she is working on her PhD. project at Universiteit van Amsterdam\, entitled ‘Re-imagining refugee camp: Time and Space formation along the Thailand-Burma borderland’. \nMatcha Phorn-in is the Executive Director of Sangsan Anakot Yaowachon\, a civil society organization working with young people from marginalized communities\, many of whom are indigenous\, in disaster-prone Thai villages at the border with Myanmar.
