Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. DESCRIPTION:The call for proposals will be open from 2 May to 17 July 2019. \nThe essential content for the IUCN World Conservation Congress is provided by quality proposals\, submitted on a competitive basis. \nIf your proposal is selected\, in your session\, you will have an opportunity to engage a targeted and influential audience of leaders and decision makers from government\, civil society\, business\, and academia as well as conservation and sustainable development professionals from around the world. Hosting a session is not only an opportunity to showcase your organisation and its activities\, but also a chance for you to receive feedback from key stakeholders\, generate new partnerships and inform action on a global scale. \nThere are a number of different types of sessions you can consider hosting\, from formal thematic stream sessions\, focussed on developing ideas from the thematic plenaries\, to  training and capacity building sessions\, “a Campus”\, or a “Speaker Pitch” during which you can showcase your conservation work and your organisation’s achievements\, to a broad audience. \nThe session types listed below are open for proposals. Descriptions of each session type can be found on the dedicated page. \n\nThematic Stream Sessions\nSpeaker Pitches\nCampus Sessions\n\nTo be selected for inclusion in the final Congress programme\, event proposals must meet a series of criteria. \nFor example\, in addition to the overall merit of the proposal\, session proposals will be evaluated based on their alignment with the draft IUCN Programme 2021-2024\, their gender responsiveness\, their degree of youth engagement\, their intended engagement with the audience\, and other factors.Please refer to the Outline of the Call for Proposals for the full list of criteria\, and detailed guidelines on how to submit a successful proposal.  \nRemember that successful events are those that involve participants\, and provide ample space for discussion and the exchange of ideas. SUMMARY:Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute
DESCRIPTION:Registration: JUNE 17 TO AUGUST 9\, 2019 \nSEASSI is an eight-week intensive language training program for undergraduates\, graduate students and professionals. It has been held since 1983 and hosted by UW-Madison in 1994-1995 and then since 2000. Instruction is offered for academic credit in eight languages at the 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd year levels. \nBURMESE\nFILIPINO\nHMONG\nINDONESIAN\nJAVANESE\nKHMER\nLAO\nTHAI\nVIETNAMESE \nQuestions about SEASSI or the status of your application? \nPlease email us: seassi@seasia.wisc.edu. \nEach language course is equivalent to two semesters of study\, with full academic year credit. Instruction is given in small individualized groups taught by a team consisting of a coordinator (usually a linguist specializing in Southeast Asian language pedagogy) and teachers who are native speakers of that language. Instruction is intensive. Classes are held from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm\, Mondays through Fridays. Most students find that they spend an additional three to four hours per day on homework. \nSEASSI also offers a limited number of spots for students to participate in SEASSI classes via distance. SUMMARY:AAS-in-Asia 2019: Asia on the Rise? 1-3 July 2019
DESCRIPTION:The AAS-in-Asia conferences are intended to be smaller size conferences than the typical AAS Annual Conferences. This conference gives our members and others interested in Asian Studies\, who are unable to attend the Annual Conferences held in North America\, the opportunity to participate in panel sessions and network with colleagues in a more intimate setting. Although smaller in size\, these conferences include the same exciting features as the Annual Conference including sessions\, keynote speakers\, book exhibits and receptions. Each year\, AAS-in-Asia conferences are a joint production between the Association for Asian Studies and a local host university and committee. \nThe Association for Asian Studies (AAS) is a scholarly\, non-political\, non-profit professional association\, open to all persons interested in Asia. With over 10\,000 members worldwide\, representing all the regions and countries of Asia and all academic disciplines across the humanities and social sciences\, the AAS is the largest organization of its kind. \nAAS membership has grown significantly in recent years\, with an increasing number of scholars from Asia crossing the Pacific to attend AAS annual conferences. Responding to this trend\, the AAS Board of Directors enthusiastically endorsed the idea to have AAS conferences in Asia in partnership with local institutes and universities. \nThe AAS-in-Asia does not replace the large annual conference held each spring in North America. SUMMARY:Panel Discussion and Launch of the Report “Jobs in SEZs: Migrant Garment Factory Workers in the Mekong Region”
DESCRIPTION:Special economic zone (SEZ) development in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) has been expanding in recent years. Designed to capture foreign investment and accelerate regional economic integration\, three SEZs are being established in Myanmar\, along with roughly 30 in Cambodia\, 10 in Thailand\, and over 30 in other GMS countries. The garment industry\, a prominent labour-intensive industry within the sub-region\, is operating in these spaces. SEZs\, offering investment privileges\, quality infrastructure\, and weakened labour protections\, are attractive locations for garment manufacturers seeking low production and labour costs. Their manufacturing production increasingly hinges on both internal and cross-border migrant labour. Although women represent the majority of the sector’s workforce\, they are often concentrated in the lowest-paying positions with the least recognised skills. The challenges that women workers face are compounded when they are also migrants as they experience unique vulnerabilities. \nOn 3 July at 6 PM the report Jobs in SEZs: Migrant Garment Factory Workers in the Mekong Region will be launched at SEA Junction. The report presents the findings of a research conducted by the Mekong Migration Network (MMN) and Asian Institute of Technology (AIT)\, supported by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) on labor and migration issues in Mekong SEZs through a gendered lens. Guided by the question of whether the jobs being created within these zones are promoting decent work for women migrant workers\, this study developed four case studies of SEZs\, including Thilawa SEZ (Yangon Region\, Myanmar)\, Phnom Penh SEZ (Phnom Penh\, Cambodia)\, Manhattan SEZ (Svay Rieng Province\, Cambodia)\, and Tak SEZ (Tak Province\, Thailand)\, with a particular focus on the garment industry. Although Mekong SEZs may have the potential to support opportunities for decent work\, the project’s findings suggest that this potential has yet to be realised. \nThe panel discussion will highlight key findings of the research.
