DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. SUMMARY:IUCN World Conservation Congress
DESCRIPTION:The call for proposals will be open from 2 May to 17 July 2019. \nThe essential content for the IUCN World Conservation Congress is provided by quality proposals\, submitted on a competitive basis. \nIf your proposal is selected\, in your session\, you will have an opportunity to engage a targeted and influential audience of leaders and decision makers from government\, civil society\, business\, and academia as well as conservation and sustainable development professionals from around the world. Hosting a session is not only an opportunity to showcase your organisation and its activities\, but also a chance for you to receive feedback from key stakeholders\, generate new partnerships and inform action on a global scale. \nThere are a number of different types of sessions you can consider hosting\, from formal thematic stream sessions\, focussed on developing ideas from the thematic plenaries\, to  training and capacity building sessions\, “a Campus”\, or a “Speaker Pitch” during which you can showcase your conservation work and your organisation’s achievements\, to a broad audience. \nThe session types listed below are open for proposals. Descriptions of each session type can be found on the dedicated page. \n\nThematic Stream Sessions\nSpeaker Pitches\nCampus Sessions\n\nTo be selected for inclusion in the final Congress programme\, event proposals must meet a series of criteria. \nFor example\, in addition to the overall merit of the proposal\, session proposals will be evaluated based on their alignment with the draft IUCN Programme 2021-2024\, their gender responsiveness\, their degree of youth engagement\, their intended engagement with the audience\, and other factors.Please refer to the Outline of the Call for Proposals for the full list of criteria\, and detailed guidelines on how to submit a successful proposal.  \nRemember that successful events are those that involve participants\, and provide ample space for discussion and the exchange of ideas. SUMMARY:Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute
DESCRIPTION:Registration: JUNE 17 TO AUGUST 9\, 2019 \nSEASSI is an eight-week intensive language training program for undergraduates\, graduate students and professionals. It has been held since 1983 and hosted by UW-Madison in 1994-1995 and then since 2000. Instruction is offered for academic credit in eight languages at the 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd year levels. \nBURMESE\nFILIPINO\nHMONG\nINDONESIAN\nJAVANESE\nKHMER\nLAO\nTHAI\nVIETNAMESE \nQuestions about SEASSI or the status of your application? \nPlease email us: seassi@seasia.wisc.edu. \nEach language course is equivalent to two semesters of study\, with full academic year credit. Instruction is given in small individualized groups taught by a team consisting of a coordinator (usually a linguist specializing in Southeast Asian language pedagogy) and teachers who are native speakers of that language. Instruction is intensive. Classes are held from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm\, Mondays through Fridays. Most students find that they spend an additional three to four hours per day on homework. \nSEASSI also offers a limited number of spots for students to participate in SEASSI classes via distance. SUMMARY:Fake News and Elections in Asia
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nStakeholders in Southeast Asia are increasingly expressing their concerns over the rise of information manipulation to influence public views and behavior\, mislead\, incite hatred and fear and even revise factual historical accounts. Behavioral manipulation has occurred at the grassroots level as charismatic leaders and groups take to social media to spread hate speech and fake news with the aim of gaining adherents to their cause in long running conflicts that threaten democratic values. \n \nA range of governments in Asia have introduced or have announced their intention to enact legislation to cover fake news. Traditionally “fake news” or one-sided propaganda have been generated by authoritarian governments who controlled local media and later introduced a variety of legislation to mitigate the flow of alternative information from websites and social media. The introduction of fake news bills targeting individual actors and alternative news portals is an evolution in the slew of legislation authoritarian regimes have been passing over the years against alternative content generated by online communications. Attention has also shifted to technology companies and their role in combating fake news\, misinformation and rumours. Here artificial intelligence and data science are beginning to provide an understanding of viral social media content movement and its impact on habit forming behaviours. \nOverall\, early analysis shows that democracy\, the rule of law and freedom of expression are the likely victims of these emerging legislation to combat fake news. This conference will examine the phenomenon of fake news or disinformation and its use and abuse by governments\, private entities and social media\, the role of the citizen in the consumption of such ‘news’\, the responsibility of media outlets\, technology companies and the emerging legislation around it and its impact on human rights. It will also critically examine the role media literacy programme and the work of fact check centres. \nThemes \nThe key issues that will be examined are as follows are: \n\nHistory of misinformation by governments and media outlets\nEmerging laws and legislation to curb disinformation\nFake news and its impact on voter behaviour and communal violence\nEffectiveness of media literacy programmes and fact check endeavours\nRole of artificial intelligence\, data science\, technology on habit forming behaviour\nImpact on democracy\, rule of law and freedom of expression\nAny other relevant or related themes\n\nObjectives \nThe conference aims to achieve the following objectives: \n\nConvene interested individuals and organizations researching misinformation in Asia;\nExchange information and trends around legislation to curb fake news  in Asia;\nAdvance knowledge on role of technology and data on habit forming behavior in Asia; and\nExamine the impact on democracy\, human rights\, freedom of expression and rule of law\n\nConference Structure \nThe conference will consist of thematic panels\, country-specific discussions and a final plenary session which will be open to civil society groups\, political parties\, international organisations\, government officials and the academic community to facilitate knowledge sharing and networking opportunities. \nVenue \n10 July at Asia Centre \n5-6pm: Partners Meeting \n6-8pm: Welcome Reception and Networking \n11-12 July \nMongkutsamatiwong Building\, \nFaculty of Communication Arts\, Chulalongkorn University \n254 Phayathai Road\, Wangmai\, Pathumwan \nBangkok 10330 Thailand \nAlso see Programme Outline. \nConference Fee \nThis is a self-funded conference\, hence a flat fee of USD$300 that will be charged to all keynote\, paper and poster presenters and participants.
