DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. DESCRIPTION:The call for proposals will be open from 2 May to 17 July 2019. \nThe essential content for the IUCN World Conservation Congress is provided by quality proposals\, submitted on a competitive basis. \nIf your proposal is selected\, in your session\, you will have an opportunity to engage a targeted and influential audience of leaders and decision makers from government\, civil society\, business\, and academia as well as conservation and sustainable development professionals from around the world. Hosting a session is not only an opportunity to showcase your organisation and its activities\, but also a chance for you to receive feedback from key stakeholders\, generate new partnerships and inform action on a global scale. \nThere are a number of different types of sessions you can consider hosting\, from formal thematic stream sessions\, focussed on developing ideas from the thematic plenaries\, to  training and capacity building sessions\, “a Campus”\, or a “Speaker Pitch” during which you can showcase your conservation work and your organisation’s achievements\, to a broad audience. \nThe session types listed below are open for proposals. Descriptions of each session type can be found on the dedicated page. \n\nThematic Stream Sessions\nSpeaker Pitches\nCampus Sessions\n\nTo be selected for inclusion in the final Congress programme\, event proposals must meet a series of criteria. \nFor example\, in addition to the overall merit of the proposal\, session proposals will be evaluated based on their alignment with the draft IUCN Programme 2021-2024\, their gender responsiveness\, their degree of youth engagement\, their intended engagement with the audience\, and other factors.Please refer to the Outline of the Call for Proposals for the full list of criteria\, and detailed guidelines on how to submit a successful proposal.  \nRemember that successful events are those that involve participants\, and provide ample space for discussion and the exchange of ideas. SUMMARY:Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute
DESCRIPTION:Registration: JUNE 17 TO AUGUST 9\, 2019 \nSEASSI is an eight-week intensive language training program for undergraduates\, graduate students and professionals. It has been held since 1983 and hosted by UW-Madison in 1994-1995 and then since 2000. Instruction is offered for academic credit in eight languages at the 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd year levels. \nBURMESE\nFILIPINO\nHMONG\nINDONESIAN\nJAVANESE\nKHMER\nLAO\nTHAI\nVIETNAMESE \nQuestions about SEASSI or the status of your application? \nPlease email us: seassi@seasia.wisc.edu. \nEach language course is equivalent to two semesters of study\, with full academic year credit. Instruction is given in small individualized groups taught by a team consisting of a coordinator (usually a linguist specializing in Southeast Asian language pedagogy) and teachers who are native speakers of that language. Instruction is intensive. Classes are held from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm\, Mondays through Fridays. Most students find that they spend an additional three to four hours per day on homework. \nSEASSI also offers a limited number of spots for students to participate in SEASSI classes via distance. SUMMARY:Book Launch “Balinese Keris. Metal\, Masculinity\, Magic” by Garrett Kam
DESCRIPTION:The keris or kris is a dagger famous for its wavy blade\, although some do have straight blades. Keris can be found in those parts of Southeast Asia infused with Malay culture (southern Thailand\, southern Philippines\, Brunei\, Malaysia\, Singapore and Indonesia)\, but are most often associated with Indonesia and particularly Java and Bali. There they are embedded in complex socio-cultural realities as expressed in rituals\, sacred ceremonies\, performing arts\, martial arts\, epics and magic among others. \nThis rich tradition will be the focus of the book launch ““Balinese Keris. Metal\, Masculinity\, Magic” on 14 July at 5 PM at SEA Junction. The book\, written by cultural expert Garrett Kam and published by C. Zwartenkot Art Books (2019)\, encapsulates major aspects of Balinese keris from their manufacturing to their gender and spiritual dimensions. It describes the keris’ rich contexts while recognizing the highly-accomplished art of the blade\, hilt and scabbard. \nAt the launch\, the writer will talk about his book and perform a keris dance. In a symbolic gesture\, he will then hand the book over to Pornrat Damrhung\, Professor of Theatre and Dramatic Arts at Chulalongkorn University\, as representative of the art and culture community in Thailand. At the event\, there will be limited copies of the book available for sale and the author will be glad to sign them if so desired. \nAbout the Author \nGarrett Kam received his bachelor and master degrees from the University of Hawaii. He has been living in Bali since 1987 and became a ritual assistant in 1990 at Pura Samuan Tiga (Temple of the Tripartite Meeting)\, one of Bali’s most important temples\, the first and only foreigner allowed to do so. In addition to blessing worshipers and bearing sacred objects\, Garrett also helps in the preparation of offerings. As a Fulbright grantee\, he researched Balinese temporary art\, especially objects burned for cremations.
