DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. DESCRIPTION:The University of Mataram (Universitas Mataram) in Lombok\, Indonesia is organizing a study visit to  Thailand for students in the faculty of Political Sciences and International Development to enhance their understanding of neighboring countries and regional processes. They will be expected to apply their theoretical knowledge to socio-conomic and cultural issues\, including tourism\, to the discovery of Thailand  while also promoting the still relatively less known province of West Nusa Tenggara. \nAs part of the study visit\, they will be coming to SEA Junction on 16 August at 10.30am and our director Rosalia Sciortino will present on Southeast Asia and discuss how SEA Junction operates to promote knowledge exchange and interaction on Southeast Asia. \nLecturer \nRosalia Sciortino\, MA\, PhD is Associate Professor at the Institute for Population and Social Research\, Mahidol University\, Visiting Professor in the Master in International Development Studies (MAIDS)\, Chulalongkorn University\, and founder and Director of SEA Junction (www.seajunction.org). SUMMARY:A Green Future for Southeast Asia?
DESCRIPTION:Favored by climatic and soil conditions\, Southeast Asia is endowed with rich natural resources providing essential life support to the region and the world. They are a source of water\, food and energy\, and sustain a wide range of economic activities and livelihoods. Yet these precious assets have been depleted to fuel the region’s economic growth. Progress has come at heavy environmental (and social) costs as countries have pursued economic expansion at the expense of natural resources. The ‘environmental capital’ is now rapidly declining due to growing industrial and commercial demands and a burgeoning wealthier and consumerist population. This unsustainable trajectory\, if allowed to continue\, will undermine future food and human security and threaten regional development and stability. \nTo reflect on this bleak prospect and the urgency of taking concerted action to realize a green future for Southeast Asia\, SEA Junction in collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Thailand will hold a panel on 16 August 2019 at 6.30 PM at its venue. The speakers will identify key emerging environmental and conservation problems and look at what actions need to be taken and how. He also manages SEI’s global initiative on Transforming Development and Disaster Risk and contributes to the Climate Services Initiative. He currently works with different partners looking at agrarian transition; the linkages between human rights and climate change especially in the implementation of the Paris Agreement’s nationally determined contributions; and internal displacement. He has a PhD in Geography from Durham University (UK). \nRizal Malik  \nRizal is the CEO of WWF-Indonesia with more than 30 years’ professional experience in sustainable development. He was the Senior Technical Advisor on SDGs at the UNDP Office in Indonesia and Senior Communication Advisor at the World Bank Office in Indonesia. Prior to that\, he was the Secretary General of Transparency International Indonesia. He obtained his first degree in Communication from Padjadjaran University in Bandung\, and MA degree in Development Studies from University of East Anglia\, UK. He also took post-graduate courses at Cornell University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, USA. \nNatalie Phaholyothin  \nNatalie Phaholyothin is CEO of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Thailand. Prior to joining WWF\, she was an Associate Director at The Rockefeller Foundation where she managed the Transforming Health Systems Initiative in Asia. She has over 20 years of experience in the development sector with an emphasis on Southeast Asia.
